getting ready for turkey season - first time pattering

I just picked up 4 boxes of old Remington Heavy shot, 3inch #4's 1 5/8 or 13/8 (can't remember) for 10 bucks a box. By the time I shoot through all four boxes I will probably have had kids and grand kids. Also for those interested Hevi-shot # 4's are an excellent long range Fox load and also are super deadly for geese.

Never did like turkey. You bring me a wild one though, and I'll try it. but the farm raised stuff i really don't like.
I find the farm raised and the wild turkey to be on the dry side myself.
The wild ones I have taken here have a lot of darker colored meat compared to the farm counterparts. The flavor is a lot better though.
The best one was a Jake that we deep fried outside last year. It retained a stink load of moisture and was good eating. (The beer might have helped too:):))

It's not much of a hunt on my buddies farm just north of here as there's 50-75 or so that come flopping out of the trees and start fighting your decoys and each other at 6am. It's quite a show!

200 hits eh?
The only hits that count as a kill are supposed to be the ones in the brain and spine on that profile target.

You look like you're still in good shape tho because they say 3 pellets in that zone and you're safe.

You learned this from the course but is not really the proper way to view a prefect pattern.

A turkey hunter wants to test his or her gun at a max range which in most cases is at 40 yards. The shooter should try and find a choke/shell combo that can throw the most dence pattern and evenly into a circle around the head and neck of a turkey. If you happen to pull slightly you still have a powerfull shot pattern to take down your target. You are right as to the more shot in the kill area is the best, but if you don't have a pattern outside of these kill shots you don't have a gun that will be able to make you as a hunter/shooter that confident in a max range shot.

The more shot in that circle at 40 yards the better and 200 shot is a very good pattern.

If you want to learn more of the above the basic Wild turkey hunting drop by the Toronto Sportsman show between March 17-21 at 4:00pm at the seminar stage and listen to my seminars. I touch on things to improve your success as a turkey hunter....

Nice pattern. I just use my 30" full choke mossburg. It get a tighter pattern than alot of the so called Turkey guns out there. Try a tighter choke if you can and maybe a #4 shot you might be surprised. Out side of that you should pattern your shot gun for the 40 to 50 yrd. Oh yea carry extra decoys. I had a yote come running in and rip my decoy apart before I had a chance to shoot it.

Haha! Now that would be something to see.
Last year while sitting on a fence line listening to the dozens of turkey come down from the roost a yotte zipped past me and my decoys right into the treed area where they were. We both ate wild turkey that day.:)

Oh yes, I am feeling turkey fever here in Manitoba too! Opening day, Apr. 24 and no hassle for a license. I have a new pop-up blind (never been one for camo), and a pot call that are itching to get used.
