Getting rid of stupid 38 special ring in 357 cylinder?

I got tired of the .38 build-up and now just use .357 cases - but I used a .45acp brush on a drill after letting the cylinders soak in Wipe-Out. They were clean in seconds. I have heard of the steel wool on a .38 brush and drill, as well.

The PPC guys used to take a .38 SPL case and drill the flash hole larger. Expand the case mouth until it is a snug fit in the cylinder. Screw the case onto a wooden dowel and you have a handy dandy brass scraper. Use it at the end of your range visit to scrape out the worst of the deposits.

Just use 357 problem solved. I usually just soak my 686 with hopes for about 20 minutes. It normally shoots 357. Now what bugs is the discolouration at front of cylinder,I didn't believe the fellow when he told me to use an eraser , but it works.

This... except that the OP said, "...I have a TON on .38 cases from all the factory .38 I shot last year." :)

Using 38 cases in a 357 lever rifle becomes more of a cleaning problem. And I don't find the 38s feed as reliably in my Rossi lever.

Brownells sells a "Flex Hone" in .38/.357 (and other calibers) for polishing cylinders. I bought one about 20 years ago. I clean the cylinder then use the Flex Hone once a year, it gets rid of the ring and allows cartridge cases to slide out a lot faster.
