Getting some wood

Decoys are packed, shells in their case, waders by the back door, dogs climbing the walls. Heading out in 15 minutes. Can't beat wood duck hunting in your own back yard.

I was worried about the rain we had last night - it doesn't take much to make the river unsafe. But I checked it this morning at 4 and we are good to go.

I flushed up 6 woodies this morning. Didn't shoot though. I like watching them in the spring

Me too. Between them and pheasant as my fave fowl for the table.

I got out this morning with Nos & a buddy. It's a wood duck spot that we sometimes get mallards & black ducks at, but usually later...

Here is Nos with one of them, a female wood duck my buddy shot. I took two male wood ducks. A good hunt considering we are off the beaten track & heard very little shooting near us.

Hit up a local lake this morning. Clouds broke overnight and it was a beautiful sunny morning. Hence one duck flew by just out of range and that was it.

Was a wood duck too. They're like my nemesis when it comes to hunting. Sneaky little *******.

Yesterday was nuts. For about half an hour, it was 1 - 5 minutes between fly-by's. This morning, not so much. I saw 4. Dogs had fun, though - and that makes it for me.

Hey - sorry for the lack of pictures, but my spot does no lend itself well to accommodating sensitive electronics. Picture this: eroded river bank - 7 feet almost straight down directly into the water, waders, full decoy bag on and shotgun strapped to my back, folding stool in one hand, ammo box in the other, crazy ass dog on a leash looped around my shoulder/neck, and in total darkness except for the Petzl attached to my hat. And it was raining.

But what an opener. From legal light (6:15ish) and for the next 40 minutes, non-stop action. Groups of birds every 2 minutes. I managed a few, but for someone who goes bird hunting as often as I do, I have to be the worst shot in history. I was shooting 4's and 6's from an IC choke with a range from 10 to 30 yards. I could not believe the shots I was missing. It's a good thing there's a 3 cartridge limit because I would have probably gone broke. What the hell is wrong with me?

Went out again this weekend and brought the camera this time. The light wasn't great.
