Getting started.

I want to buy a antique pistol. A Ball and cap hand gun. By the way, There is a gun show in Woodstock, Ontario. Sunday, March the 1st. Now that that is out of the way..........I have my non-restricted firearms licence, P.A.L . Can I go and shoot this antique pistol out in the woods, while I'm target practicing with my other more modern guns. Is that legal? If the cops ( the law ) pull up, Am I legally allowed
1) to have it on me?
2) to load and shoot?

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse. As they say. I looked back 13 pages of threads and couldn't find the answer to this.

Let's start with the pistol first; antique Colt and Remingtons start up in the $1000 range vs $150 - $200 for a secondhand Italian replica
Technically you can carry an antique with you in open carry and shoot it anywhere it is legal to shoot. In practical terms expect to get lots of hassle from police and conservation officers unless you happen to be shooting somewhere very remote or with virtually no one around. I would suggest joining a shooting club and using a replica on their range, plus get your restricted license and then a long term ATT

Thanks for the info mooncoon. The CFC couldn't give me a striaght answear on this. I think it would be a fun hobby to get into, espically if there are no restriction on shooting the cap and ball handgun. like blasting some pop cans while camping.

The restrictions are largely practical ones because few people are aware of the law concerning antique, because few would recognize a valid antique at any distance and most would report someone shooting illegally with a pistol to the police who in turn would not be familiar with the law. If you live and shoot near a small rural community and take the time to clear things with the local police and conservation people you should have minimal problems but expect an uphill battle to convince them in the first place.
