I purchased a Remington 700 SPS Varmint a few months ago and this weekend I changed the scope on it to a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x Tactical after much research.

I am using Commercial Ammunition (trying all kinds for now) and I am getting better at this! (been over 10 years since I shot a gun before I got the 700)

Here are some pics of the targets:

Out-of-the-box accuracy?

Good results! I just purchased the same rifle myself and am waiting for my scope-rings to arrive. I have a brand-new so-so scope (a Mueller APV) that I'm going to try on the rifle.

Quick question ... did you do anything to the rifle (like bedding the action) before you started shooting? A lot of the shooters on this forum say that the stock is the weak point on that rifle (and should be bedded), but I'm figuring that it's probably just fine for my purposes. Local shooters have advised me to leave it alone if the first results are reasonable.

And your results sure look more-than-reasonable! :)

this rifle was my very first rifle in MANY years so I literally purchased it, went to range, put a bullet in and bang :)

I did not change ANYTHING on it.

now that I read the forums I should of cleaned the barrel to remove any preserving crap they put in there.

I have not even cleaned it at all yet (will be doing that this week after work, I broke my cleaning rod on my 303)

from my experience Ammunition sure makes a big difference, the 8.75 Winchester USA 223 cheap stuff is hard to get a nice grouping but the others I can get a better grouping, so I can just imagine the grouping on some hand loaded ammunition.

Get yourself a Lee 35th Anniversary Kit, a set of dies and start cranking out the ammo.

The kit comes with the Lee reloading manual and you should get another to cross reference.

.223 is a great cartridge with lots of info on the web for loading and load testing.

Hi Luc,

Careful bro, selling hand loaded ammo is against the law and discussing it in here is verboten. well, enough of that stuff...


Hand-loaded ammo loaded for your particular gun is part of the answer. Seating depth, velocities and a number of other factors must be parsed so that you can create a load for your gun that will work to its full potential.

Hopefully you can hook up with someone down at your local range who can show you the ropes and maybe even let you load with him until you can get your own loading up and running.

Being a 1:12 twist, it will like lighter bullets like the 55 grains. Try the Hornady factory ammo. As Richard said, shoot, and have fun! This is ONLY the beginning for you!!

Ammo brand ...

About a month ago I bought 1000 rounds of PMC 55 gr FMJ for my AR15, and I've got my fingers crossed ... hoping that the SPS likes that particular load. I also have about 200 rounds of Winchester 55 gr FMJ.

I wonder which will work better ...

well the stock on the SPS is the weak link.i had one of these (diff .Cal) and the problem i was getting was i would have groups open up and the Point of impact change on my a few inches with the same load.turned out the free floating barrel was some times touching the "tupperware" stock.once i placed the it in to a wood stock i pick up at a local gun show it was night and day.

first off I did not know selling hand-loaded ammo was against the law, my bad! won't mention it again :)

2: ya I need to pick up a nice reloading kit, First I am going to pick up a guide book and start reading, learn about the dies and all that good stuff then go from there, the Wife likes to shoot with me so it should not be too dificult to talk her into it)

3: ya I will have to research and change the stock in the near future but not right away, I want to learn how to breath properly for shooting and try tactics and new Ammo before forking up even more moola.

Booomer: ya that 55 grain stuff should be pretty good, give it a try I heard it was decent stuff and 55 grain in the 1-12 twist seems to be the way to go.
