I recently purchased a Savage 99 as seen in previous thread, This by no means is my first rifle. I took the rifle out and fired it for the second time yesterday. This time off a bench with the iron sights. It grouped well and was just a little low on aim. I really like this rifle and will probably be using it as a main hunting rifle. I was thinking of getting my name engraved on the flat part of the receiver like they did on this model in the old days. The rifle has been refinished by previous owner (very nice job) and it is the Economy model so likely very little collector value in the future. I also have no intention of ever selling it. What is the general opinion on this? I was going to get my first initial and last name. Which is the same first initial and last name as my son. So it will work out for him.

What do you all think?

If your soul intention is to keep it and then pass it on to your son then yes I'd say do it. It will be a personal inheritance and he will likely keep it based on that. If your not gonna sell it then value is irrelevant.

I have gotten a few in the past, I have greatly devalued the gun! My boys don't need my name on a gun to remember me ( I hope :) ). If they have to sell at some times they will get far less than they should, note JMHO.

A reblued 99E isn't going to be anything other than a useful hunting rifle. Not going to increase in value as a collector's item.
Just get the engraving done professionally.

hahaa wasn't there a picture of johnny cash in newfoundland with one? get that put on it lol

A good engraving can increase the value of the gun. Here we are talking scrolls etc. But also limits the resale value to those who like that sort of thing. Having your name on it of course limits it again for obvious reasons. But if you are planning on keeping it as a family keepsake or even heirloom then do what you like.
