Picked up a Gevarm 22.Never used one before but heard about them.I have fired it and it's really dif to what I'm use to as the bolt stays open until you hit the trigger and then bolt closes, fires and stays open till hitting trigger again.Barrel is stamped Carabine Automatique,10 rnd mag, round front ( globe ? ) site with a post and circel inside and military type rear.Sports an elcheapo bushnell 22 scope as well and sling swivels.
Is this a good 22 and what's it's worth ?.It's in nice shape.
Thanks, 88

"...really different to what I'm use to..." That they are. Open bolt firing is unusual. More than one model, made in France and not many around. They're ok, but parts and mags aren't easy to find and expensive if you do find a mag(around $50US). Haven't been made since the 1980's.
There's some reasonably good info on 'em here. http://openboltguns.########.com/2009/11/gevarm-rifles.html

Sounds like it's the A3. Does it look like this photo?

The A3 has a well in the pistol grip butt which holds the post inserts for the front sight. Rear sight is 25 to 100 Mauser-type. Uses the 8-rd mag. They do not have a buttplate. This particular gun is wearing a Redfield 4X on Weaver tip-off mounts attached to rails milled into top of receiver.

Below are the four .22rf models offered in North America. These are directly from a Gevelot Canada pamphlet.

Mine has the well in the pg and has 4 inserts for the front site in it plus the one in the front site for a total of 5 inserts and it has a butplate that says Gevarm.I looked and now know the sling swivels were put on by someone, not me !.So now I'm down to the A3 or maybe the A7 if it has the well in the pg as well ?.I'll check the link sunray left and go from there.Still looking for avalue ?.
Thanks, 88

88 man, you probably have the A7. It too has the well in PG and BOTH models came with 5 front inserts. Biggest difference is that the A7 fires on a CLOSED bolt, has the more normal separate firing-pin, extractor, etc., unlike the A3 which fires on an OPEN bolt.

The A7 has checkered forestock and PG but the A3 stock is NOT checkered. And, the A7 has a black rubber GEVARM marked buttplate. Below is pic of my A3's posterior. LOOK CLOSELY! You can see the beautifully filled-in holes which one would think was for mounting a buttplate.

EVERY A3 butt I've seen, looks JUST like this, complete with the filled-in screw holes. I even read in one of my reference pieces that the A3 was advertised as NOT being sold with a buttplate.

Forgot to mention: there are FOUR photos/illustrations in tht link sunray mentioned which came directly from my desk. In fact the above pic of the four rifles from a Gevelot pamphlet do NOT appear as shown in the pamphlet. I edited them to look like that. Same for others. The E1 in its take-down configuration, with BOTH mags, is the E1 rifle in my personal collection.

Finally, you asked about value. I paid a Connecticut gun dealer $165 for my A7 in 2004. It was scoped and missing the original Mauser-type rear sight. Got a NEW original sight FREE through wheelin' and dealin'. And, I paid $447 this past January for the A3 from a Greg Martin auction held in Vegas. It is MUCH better original condition than the A7.

Mauser, I have an A3 and I figured that somebody had removed the buttplate and filled the holes, i would have never guessed it was made that way. Thanks for the post.

I'm glad you got some use out of that info, Silverback. That's the problem gun collectors face today. Makers who've gone out of business, left no, or too few, public records for future owners of their products to refer to.

It's really strange how little has been written about the Gevarms. I've been patiently gathering up and stashing away all info as I run across it. I've got a researched article on the Mossberg Brownie in the 2011 Edition of Gun Digest which is on sale now at Amazon. My piece starts on page 40 if you want to check it out.

For their 2012 Edition I've already got an article on the virually unknown Canadian TOBIN ARMS CO. "$5.00 Boy Scout Rifle." The majority of that info came from folks here on CGN, or they led me to the info.

brand new gevarm mags are availible from del selins gunsmithing he has 15rnd and 20 rnd i belive go for $50

they are made in the states

My Gevarm fires with an open bolt !.No checkering and not sure about original finish but the butplate is a little bigger than the stock. As you said the A7 fires with closed bolt and mine does with open bolt so at least now I know mine is an A3.I got this 22 from original owner and will ask if he redid the stock. It does have cutouts under and to the rear of stock just to the pg.I'm sure this must be an A3 as said.Could it have been ordered with a butplate or the stock has been changed!
Thanks, 88

88 man while Gevelot Canada was still operating I'm pretty sure a previous owner of your rifle would have had no problem ordering a regular Gevarm-marked buttplate. The same black rubber plate was used on the other three models, so it probably was the same fit to those filled holes in the A3s.

broncoo I would like to look into those magazines you mention, but the name "del selins gunsmithing" doesn't have any meaning to me. Do you have a URL for a website, or something similar? Would be greatly appreciated.

I've got enough of both 8s and 20s, all original, for my needs, but I get queries from a lot of other owners who still need 'em.
