Out grouse hunting with the good ol' Gevarm, the cheapo scope failed miserably in low light conditions in the smokey forest. It's missing the front sight dovetail, else I'd use that.

Do any other firearms use a dovetail of same dimensions? .308 at the top, .375 aprox. at the bottom. Other alternative is I'm thinking get a piece of metal and make a front sight post using an angle grinder if I'm unable to get a fitting front post sight.
Else generally I'd like to clean up the rifle somewhat. The original finish has faded badly. Or leave as is? Opinions?

The finish on the receiver is just paint, so that might be a little tricky to touch up and have it match. I would definitely have the barrel reblued, and refinish the stock if you're so inclined. They're very accurate and reliable if you can get over the twitchy open bolt.

As for the front sight, is that not a standard sized dovetail? You should be able to pick up a replacement at Brownell's or a gun shop should be able to order you one in. The sight on mine is a simple blade, but I've seen them with bead sights as well.

Of course the front sight I buy is a tad too low.
Made a new ramp for the rear sight, trying to bring it down. Will take it to the range later. Hopefully I won't have to buy a higher up front sight.

Some steel, a bunch of files, a vise, some emery cloth and touch-up blue... you would be amazed at how quickly you have a new sight.

Get Burchwood Casey Aluminium Black for the receiver
It does a real nice job , but it is more grey in colour than black because of the composition of the aluminum
making up the receiver
You will need to get two bottles and wire brush the old finish off with a dremel tool
The barrel could be cleaned up with very fine emery cloth and hot oil blued

You might try a cheap-o red dot. I'm using one on my E-1 for steel challenge and it works very well. No magnification, unfortunately but very quick to acquire the target. The original front sight is in the gravel somewhere at the range.
