Hey guys, bought this gewehr 98 as my first gun ever in 2007. Dont crucify me, but it was drilled and tapped by a previous owner…. For the price i paid, i couldn't complain.

Im just wondering what scope mounts will fit these as id like to use it for hunting.

Provided that it’s sitting in a full length military stock, I’d be inclined to turn it into a low/high turret clone. The mounts aren’t too expensive and it would preserve the general military look of the rifle better than a random commercial mount.

The only issue is that you’ll probably have to fill the existing holes and re-tap, but the dirty work of the last guy will be covered by the mounts, so it won’t look awful.

Stop right there! If it is in otherwise full military configuration, Nick can repair the holes to almost invisible.

Weaver #45 and #46 bases will fit those holes.

You will likely have to round off the front edge of the rear base to fit against the charger guide on the rear receiver bridge.

There used to be one piece mounts available. You will have to look online to see if you can find any.

Leupold also makes bases to fit those holes but the rear bridge has to be machined or ground for them to fit.

Making those holes disappear isn't a big deal, IF you know what you're doing. Just make sure to give full disclosure when you sell it.

If that rifle is chambered for the ubiquitous 7.92x57 (8x57) it will do anything on a game animal that a 30-06 will do, if you load it to higher pressures than North American commercial manufacturers do.

Norma, RWS and I believe Privi pressures are approaching 50k psi. Appx 35% more than NA made ammo.

The 8x57 is still a very popular hunting round all over the world, for very good reason.

Lots of different bullet weights and components available for it.
