Gewehrfabrik Danzig

Recently came into possession of a nice old rifle. A sporter made by the Gewehrfabrik Danzig (Danzig Rifle Factory). It is build on a small ring 98 action and a stepped barrel. I'm guessing it was made in 1919 during the chaos following WWI. It doesn't have German proofs on it. I'm guessing it went from Danzig to Sweden via the old Hanseatic route. It is of course in 8x57. The recoil pad is old and marked "Holland London" with patent dates in the 1920's. It is a nice rifle, the sights line up perfectly for me.

It looks very nice, I like the Monte Carlo stock, it really seems to suit that rifle well.

I just love those old sporter Mausers.Picked up a pair of 9X57's from Tradex last year,one a small ring 98 the other a standard large ring.Both have next to no markings on them but I'm assuming they are of German origin.I think they are elegant,classy rifles and both shoot pretty well too.

Nice rifle! You should be aware that given its age, it is very likely a .318" bore, not the more modern "S" bore of .323" Proof marks may or may not tell you. Best to do a bore cast or slug the bore and measure before you shoot any hot European 8x57IS ammo in it. American generic "8MM Mauser" ammo ( Rem-Win-Fed) is underloaded and will be safe to shoot regardless of bore size.

Would the ex-Royal arsenal still be using stepped 318 barrels as late as 1919?

German makers of sporting rifles did not necessarily follow the military switch to the "S" bore 8mm. Some of the .318" diameter bores were made many years after the military standard had changed.

As far a I know, the rifle came out of the Danzig arsenal prior to the machinery being carted off to Radom. Not really a guild or private maker.

That's not a monte carlo stock, rather a straight stocked, so called "classic" with a cheekpiece. A Weatherby hump-back would be an extreme example of a monte carlo.
