Hey all.

My girlfriend has rheumatoid arthritis in both wrists and in her left hand. She is right-handed. There are some things she cannot do, and racking a pistol slide easily is one of them. I think using a revolver wouldn't present any problems.

She wants to go to the range with me but I don't own any wheel guns.

What do you guys recommend as an inexpensive "intro" revolver - preferably in 9mm because I have tons of ammo - that wouldn't be too difficult for her to operate? I want to stay with a smaller calibre because she is very small, and because a lot of recoil would probably hurt her wrist joints. So no Dirty Harry suggestions...

No .44 mag ??? So sad :(

Tagged for interest. Never shot a revolver in my life. Le sigh...

I find it awesome how you are trying to make it more accessible and easier for your girlfriend to shoot ! Love it.

My girl only shoots my 10/22. She's pretty good with it and will keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction the entire time.... almost bought an FX9 so she could shoot something bigger. But I got a .223 NR. Which she needs to learn to shoot.

Happy shooting !!

There are no inexpensive 9mm revolvers. Revolvers were/are designed to use rimmed straight walled cases like .38special.
I don’t think its such a hardship to retool & reload for 38special. You might enjoy it too.

The EE has many fine revolvers with 4.2” barrels which would be weight-saving, that are suitable. Perhaps you might consider a .22 caliber revolver?
The Ruger Wrangler sells for C$299.00 for a sixshot revolver, with reduced recoil. Expand your 9mm limitations.....

If it has to be 9mm, Alfa Project Revolvers come to mind, model 9251 and 9261 both DA available in stainless and black...needs moonclips.
or a Single action for twice the price: Ruger Blackhawk convertible, comes with a 357mag and a 9mm cylinder.
For specs and pricing, you can look them up at Prophet River Firearms (site sponsor/dealer here on CGN, located in Lloydminster,AB)

Alfa ones are very heavy in DA (~14 lbs pull) without a main spring job, but in SA (manually cocked) have a very light triggers … can be in 22LR and 9mm, shoot very similarly
for 9mm moon clips are a must to have …
prices on these are very reasonable, can get a new one for $500 - $600 … many dealers still have some stock .. and not just site sponsors ..

I am going to agree with the Alfa Project revolver in 9mm using moon clips.
A single action revolver would probably be difficult for her to load & unload .
You have lots of 9mm ammo & moon clips can be loaded at home making it easier to load & unload at the range.
If however she finds that a standard 9mm recoils too much then either very mild 9mm reloads or a ,22.

If you choose a 9mm Glock, there are options.

I have arthritis bad in both hands. To rack a slide I grab the slide over the top and pull back using the whole hand and not just thumb and forefinger. I also find some semi’s easier than others to shoot. I find the 1911 easy but my hk 45 hurts. I also find the way a single action revolver rolls in the hand makes it very comfortable to shoot. With semi’s a mag lula is a must these days. Sold all my large caliber revolvers because of this

A .22 revolver. I have one of those old Sentinal revolvers and its a load of fun. Plus you can find them for a good priced used.

Agreed. These are unappreciated, and the price often reflects this. Consider the Double Nine western version as well. They shoot very well.

Some interesting ideas. I wasn't including rimfire but I guess that's an option (and not a big investment if she decides she doesn't like it).

I like that slide pull for the Glock. I have a Glock 19 - maybe that would help.

Dogzilla it's a combination of diminished strength in her left hand *and* she can't really make a fist/grasp with that hand with the force necessary to take hold of the slide. Basically she has to "palm" it, and that isn't enough grip. She tried with my Glock, my P226 clone and my Tokarev and couldn't rack any of them. She's a candidate for surgery but that's going to be a long wait (and long recovery).

As far a 9mm, i would say 38 special is basically the same as 9mm. A steel revolver with a heavy long bbl will not kick much at all. And it can be down loaded if required. Lighter projectiles would kick less as well.

Never heard of those, they look pretty neat! Might have to pick one up.

I bought two. A 6" Sentinel as new in the box for $175, and a 12-6 4" in used condition for $100. They do shoot very well. Double action pulls are heavy, but single actions are crisp. Hard to beat for a lower priced recreational revolver.
