There is apile of crows and magpies this year, has anyone heard of finding the roost for the night then snuffing the out with a flashlight and a .22lr. I have never done this but one of my old mans buddys said they use to do it when they where kids(in the 50's) he said it wasn't uncommon to get 100/ night. I think I found a roost down in a coulee not far from where I live, just debating if I should give this ago some night. There are no house around for miles, mine being the closest, is it legal to hammer them at night. May even use a high fps pellet gun a rguger thats 1000 fps.

The only time I can get crows or magpies is if there is carcass lying around and they are hungry and distracted. Those birds are very smart and won't come within 400+ yards if they see I'm holding a rifle or hear any gunfire. If you can get a hundred of them in one go'round and be close enough to do it with a flashlight and an airgun... well.... my birds are gonna kick your birds' asses at the next spelling bee.

Why not ambush them a distance from the main roost morning or evening with a shot gun and trap loads. use an e-caller or hand call and set up at a staging location where crows gather and frolic. You will have a blast and the roost will provide many good shoots as opposed to shooting up the roost proper and scaring the lot away. Strange to find roosts this time of the year with more than a couple hundred birds. Come late summer/early fall congrgations of many thousands are common sight.

Studying the BC synopsis, it appears you could legally shoot crows and magpies at night, but not with the use of a light.
It states you can not shoot any GAME, between the hours of one hour after sunset until one hour before sunrise.
Crows and magpies are not game.
However, it further states that no WILDLIFE may be shot by using an artificial light.
Crows and magpies are wildlife.

An old friend of me told my favourite crow story. I can't do it any justice, but will pass on the highlights.

This was years back. A bounty was given for dead crows. You would get shotgun shells in return for a pair of crow feet. A group of young friends who lived in close proximity to a military base decided they would find a way to use the bounty to feed their hunting habits.

The young friends found a tree where a large murder of crows would roost for the night. The problem with shooting them, was that they had to spend shotgun shells in order to get more shells.... not a winning venture.

They had to find a way to improve their odds. The idea they came up with was to raid the local army base and liberate a number of hand grenades. They took the grenades and set them up in the roosting tree. Care was taken to come up with a system to simultaneously pull the pins.

The sun soon set, and the crows returned to their roosting tree. The young friends put their plan into action. A large explosion resulted.

The following day the young friends collected 155 crow legs (couldn't find 1) and brought them in to collect their shotgun shell bounty.

No word if they were caught....

I wish I could tell the story properly, it really made me laugh. And unfortunately the first time I heard it was also the last.

Brad.

I have done it but only in the fall when the crows are in big bunches. Spend alot of time drining around in the evenings looking for a roost but when you find one it's great. Get lots of guys with shotguns and get there early and wait. As evening aproaches you will get singles but once the sungoes down the mob starts to come and you can't shoot and reload fast enough to keep them out of the trees. Once they are in the trees they will not come out. You could kill them all with sticks if you could reach them.
