I met up with a buddy today at the range. He recently bought the Mossberg 500 2 barrel combo from Cabelas and had it with him today. I have to say, I was very disappointed with it. It felt like a toy compared to my Norinco HP-9. Very plasticky and the fore end was very wobbly. The only advantage it has in my opinion is about a 2lbs weight savings. Am I missing something? I was under the impression that they were supposed to be decent guns. The Maverick 88 Security that I handled felt much better than this 500.
 
Yes, any 870 part will fit on a HP9.

You can take a lot of weight off the HP9 by replacing the plastic stock and forearm. Those are quite heavy compared to everything else currently on the market.
 
Is this for both the 18" and 14" versions? Heard a couple stories about the 18" not accepting 870 barrels, but couldn't get a definitive answer on if it was a rare case, or to do with the design.

correct. Look at how long the magazine is to see if barrels will interchange. I have seen some of the 18'5 chinese guns that have a longer mage tube, therefore the barrel ring is farther out than standard 870. The 12.5 and 14's are good to go. And of course, the 8.5 is it's own critter
 
My HP-9 has an ATI pistol grip stock meant for an 870 as well as a 28" barrel from an 870 Express (for skeet). It fits just as well as the factory 14" barrel does. I was told by the folks at Al Simmons Gun Shop where I bought it that the version of the HP-9 that came from the factory with an 18" barrel will not accept 870 barrels.
 
I put a Magpul forend on my HP-9.

I got it to fit, but I had to dremel some of the material out of the inside of the forend to get it to slide on. Actually, more like hammer it on. And it's not coming off unless I break it off. So yes, most parts are interchangeable, but some things are slightly off spec to an 870.

That being said, I think compared to a Rem. 870 the HP-9 is about 85% of the quality. Not that I'm un-happy with mine.
 
The materials of the Mossberg 500 make it a lighter gun, including the aluminum alloy receiver. That being said, I've never heard of any reason why the Mossberg would be inferior to any 870 clone or anything.
Lighter guns may feel cheaper to people who are used to heavier goods, but Glocks will tell you this isn't necessarily the case in actual use and durability.
 
The all plastic forends on the Mossbergs have a cheaper feel but I assure you they are a solid shotgun. As mentioned the factory plastic on the HP-9 is very heavy. I swapped mine out for a hogue set and the weight reduction is very noticeable, it feels like a new shotgun. The hogue recoil pad is awesome. The factory one is pretty good but the hogue is like a thick limbsaver. Well worth the money.
 
My buddy has a Mossberg...can't recall the model number, it's a pump 12g hunting/sport model, but not the 500. It's very light weight...but maybe TOO light weight, since the pump stock's plastic cracked...and replacements are a bit difficult to just go and buy.

Beautiful. Thanks for the clarification.

Question on the 8.5" though, you mentioned it's its own critter, are there any interchangeable barrels available for it?

How much work was it getting the Hogue fore end to fit?

I'd not realized the 500 receiver was aluminum, that explains a lot.

How hard was it to get the fore end on?
 
I have the black 12" lop set. Honestly I just ham fisted the forend on and let the slide tube slowly scrape material away. Gives it a nice custom fit :D If I were to do it like a normal person I would find some round stock, saw a slit in it to hold some sandpaper, chuck it up in a drill and sand the interior that way.
 
Sorry, this may be a stupid question but how is the fore end attached to the slide tube? Does the factory one just slide off once the barrel is removed? I had a look tonight but was afraid to force it.

And while I'm at it, does anybody know where I can get a sling swivel stud that will fit the factory stock? It is already drilled and has a metal insert of some kind with really tight threads. Not really sure where to look. The LGS only has the screw in types meant for wood stocks.

oooh it will come off, put the forend in the oven for a bit to expand it and with a little elbow grease got it to slide off then tried it on my rem 870. I liked it better on the shorty so took it off the 870 (easy) and popped it back on on well gently beat the eff out of it to slide back on the shorty. Cycles fine still.
 
Have a look in the front end and you will see a large nut with slots in it. IIRC I cut a piece of 3/16" flatbar to 1 1/4" wide to use as a driver to get it off. Then the forend slides off to the front. For the sling swivel, standard machine thread swivels are threaded 10-32. Sometimes they can be tough to find but they are standardized.

Thanks supernova. Last question, how much sanding of the fore end is needed to make it fit the HP9?
