I'm totally new to optics besides red dots......

I'm looking for a compact LER Scout scope that would be more compact that what I saw so far and somewhat affordable.......

I have read many reviews but failed to find a site with reviews that didn't included UTG Scout scopes....... In my opinion, UTG scopes are cheap...... but these guys are placing them in a Top 5 or Top 10 of the best LER scopes out there (?)

Here is an interesting set up on a SOCOM 16......is that a scope or a long red dot?

Looks like an Aimpoint Pro red dot. Its funny I was doing the same research lately, looking for a pistol or scout scope for a 10/22, and I noticed the same thing: UTG and other very low end products list as "Top 5".
There doesn't seem to be a lot of choice out there for compact pistol and LER scopes.

I normally shoot with a red dot up to 100 yards......but now looking at shooting at a longer distance.....maybe up to 400 yards.

I just do not like long scopes on a scout rifle......
 
The shortest, smallest LER with any magnification I've found is the Bushnell Elite 2-6. The Hi-Lux 2-7 is a good LER scope, as is the Vortex Scout, but the Vortex has a larger eye piece, and needs higher rings. Now these are just my experience, and I don't have any Leupold, or Burris to compare to.
 
I have a a Ruger GSR set up with an XS sights rail with two scopes in Leupold QR rings. The first scope is a Leupold IER Scout scope. This I like for walking or shooting from various positions(with and without sling) at the range. Despite what has been said you can shoot this setup with both eyes open. There are however some limits. When the sun is high in the sky everything is fine. When the sun is rising or sets the low angle that the light shines in on can get between your eye and the scope and interfere with your vision. Since the rifle is my hunting rifle I have a Redfield Revolution 2x7 mounted as well. This setup seems for me anyway to solve those problems. The other issue with the IER scope is that the relatively smaller objective diameter does give up a small amount of light gathering ability during the last minutes of legal shooting light. I think you should try and find someone with a rifle with a scout scope mounted and try it. It is not for everyone. Good luck.
 
I am also a member of the Scout Rifle forum. There are a few threads over there that are about this topic and no doubt some members over are running setups that you may like . Perhaps give that a try.
 
THIS SET UP IS GREAT AND TARGET AQUISITION IS SOOO FAST...

With 2X it's very easy to keep both eyes open, kind of a little window in the whole picture... JP.

Why not try a 1-4 or 1-6 scope? You can shoot both eyes open at low power. But have high power for the longer shots. Most will have red dot or etched illuminated reticles. That was what I used on my M14 years ago and it worked fine.
 
Devotion to the scout rifle concept of a forward mounted scope seems just to me to be like a hunter who only uses open sights or a bow. Personal choice. I believe it was a big deal in days gone by before red dots, and when optics were not to be relied upon, especially in combat. Kind of like "low crawling" to the bathroom. Combat zone, yes, suburban split level, not so much.
