Globe 555 Mohawk,

I believe they were SVT 40's converted to .303. I heard they are less than 100% safe but have never examined one so cannot comment.

I can confirm that much (the bolded words); they may have been the only commerically-produced semi-automatic .303 British rifles around. Too bad they didn't feed from Enfield mags...

+1
I think the word you were looking for is "qualified" or "skilled". There is no actual gun smithing license (professional accreditation/government required skill standard in Canada, only the business license provision for repairing guns at a gun business).

They were all Finn marked SVT-40's, Finland was the only source for them at the time of these botched conversions. Many great collector's pieces lost for all time. Globeco also cut-down many Swedish M-94 Carbines and Norvegian Krags and assorted Enfields also during this time period.

A buddy from the hunt camp has one. He has shot LOTS of deer with his - never had a problem feeding it a wide variety of 303 ammo. It was usually a one-shot kill for him but I have heard him empty a clip shooting at (near) a deer - Ha! It happens to everyone... He never had any FTFeed or FTFire issues - can't confirm the negative comments here about these rifles. I think he's satisfied with his - it looks bad-ass too with a ventilated hand-guard.

I believe the issue with these is they ARE reamed-out SVT's with a larger 303 chamber. The 'meat' around the new chamber get's thin at the front and barrels have been reported to rupture. Not sure how bad this problem is though. I've never had a first hand report of this ever happening.

my $.02.......

Not quite. They had SMLE barrels installed and the gas system shortened. Headspace can be problematic, to say the least.

Ran across one a couple days ago at this "other site". For Sale, page 19 of 32, half way down.
What a steal!

I worked on one this summer. Headspace was waaaayyy too tight and it was orginally an Finn SVT38. Sigh. He wanted me to test fire and sight it in as it "jammed a lot and then the thing that hits the back of the rounds was done broke". I replaced the firing pin with an SVT40 pin (which needed some lathing to get to fit in the SVT38 bolt" and refused the test fire and sighting in as I deemed the rifle unsafe to fire. With the firing pin out I could not the bolt to close all the way on many different brands of 303. Also, the gas system was near seized with rust and thanks to the butchers at Globe, I was unable to take it apart to clean. He then wanted to know how much the rifle was worth as his uncle had offered him 5000.00 for it. I told him that the magazine was worth about 150 bucks and the whole rifle with magazine was worth about 150 bucks. What an abortion those rifles are.
