An American celebrity hunter has been fined $14,500 for causing unnecessary pain and suffering to a duck.
Jeff Foiles of Pleasant Hill, Ill., has also been banned from hunting in Canada for three years.
Mr. Foiles was not in the Edmonton court where a judge sentenced him under the Migratory Birds Act and the Criminal Code.
He had previously pleaded guilty to six of 10 charges.
During one of his videotaped hunts, Mr. Foiles was seen holding up a wounded duck on camera, wrenching its neck and opening the bird's mouth while he made quacking noises.
A wildlife expert testified that the duck was conscious, alive and suffering extreme pain and stress.
Mr. Foiles has already been sentenced in the United States to 13 months in prison for other wildlife offences. He's been fined $100,000 and banned from hunting for two years.
He is to begin that sentence Dec. 20.
