not sure if this is in the right area.

I recently purchased a rifle in 308 win and am wanting to know more about it.

on the side it says globe firearms ltd ottawa canada 308 win also made in austria it has a side magazine other than that I dont really know anything about it.

I read somewhere they were a company that took military rifles and converted them into hunting rifles.

I'm pretty much just wondering value and history and whatnot really anythihng you nutz can tell me would be much appreciated.

ill upload some pics later

Looks like I will be the first to remind you.
We need a picture!
Or at least, a much better description. It's the "side magazine," you mention that makes us think Krag. But I never heard of Globe sportzeriezed Krag. (Not saying it isn't so, just saying I never heard of them.)

Yup. It's a Krag Jorgensen Sporter rechambered into .308 from 6.5x55.

Very slick action, and nifty magazine for sure, but how does she shoot and extract now with the calibre change?

I have a 30-40 Krag.
If I recall you need to very carefully pry up the ejector and pull back on the bolt, it should slide out; apparently if you break it you are pretty much hooped as far as replacement parts. It'll swivel too, it's not too formidable after you've done it once or twice. Probably should do a search on it really.
Yours is a European model?
I find mine ( which has been poorly treated) to be unbelievably smooth cycling. Mine is a Springfield manufactured unit.
Cool gun BTW

ye its not US so i assume european barrel says made in austria

and ye action is very smooth cant wait to shoot it

it defienetly doesnt look very old id say 1950's

Globe

I had a Globe sporterized Mauser 98 8X57 about 25-30 years ago. Pretty crude as I recall. There were lots of Globe guns at shops and gunshows in the Ottawa area back then. They finally closed there doors in the early-mid 1980's. They also converted Russian SVT40 rifles to .303 British. In my opinion they are worth no more than any other cut down military rifle. I'd definetly have a qualified gunsmith check that Krag converted to .308. They werent that strong in their original chambering. Think it was Bannerman that converted some Krag's to .30-06 which are said to be unsafe to fire.

My Father still has a sporter Globe Mauser 98 8x57..its not too bad and still shoot fairly well with handloads I made up. It seems to collecting dust now has he's taken a liking to my Sako and who am I to take it away from him..lol

Unless your a reloader, DO NOT FIRE THAT KRAG WITH FACTORY .308 LOADS!
The Krag is designed for 40,000 psi. chamber pressure ammo.
Factory & Military .308 can reach 60,000+ psi and would turn your Krag
into a potential death trap.

First thing to do is have the headspace checked and then have the bolt
magnafluxed to check for cracks. If the rifle passes inspection, you can
then used reduced loads that approximate 30-40 Krag pressures and
be safe.
The Krag rifles are some of the smoothest bolt actions out there and
make ideal cast bullet launchers, but the single locking lug bolt limits
them to lower pressure loads.
I repeat. Get the rifle checked out before firing, and use
REDUCED LOADS ONLY.

The Lyman 49th Edition Reloading Handbook has some reduced .308
load data that will be fine in your Krag and there's good info on
sites like Cast Boolits and Hogdon Powder.

so even tho it was rechambered in 308 its still unsafe to fire 308?

I was thinking about taking it to a gunsmith ,can anyone suggest a good one for south vancouver island

also thanks for all your help guys theres a wealth of knowledge here

You can chamber a Cooey 39 to take 308, just wouldn't be a good idea to shoot it.

Globco was the Canadian equivalent to "Sons of guns", only crappier.
They marketed all sorts of re barreled milsurps back in the day, most
were not very well thought out or put together well.

Here's 2 gunsmiths to try:
