Globe firearms model 555 .303?

Hi guys,

I managed to have a Globe Firearms Model 555 semi-auto .303 British fall into my lap. It is in Excellent condition, the metal on it is still a deep blue, the wood it very good. Its an odd Caliber, .303 Britsh, Semi-Auto, built on a Soviet SVT-40 gas operated system. Can anyone here please give me a value on this rifle?

One of the many abominations of nice milsurps unfortunately. I don't believe these are worth very much or very desirable.
 
The gun has drawbacks that effect it's value, as mentioned milsurp collectors have no interest in it. It isn't much of a hunters gun either due to the fact that it would take some major engineering to mount optics on it. My step son has one that belonged to his father, like Harry Potter it lives in the closet.

Actually the Brits made a semi in 303...more of a fugly prototype thing.

I bet a US collector would jump at a chance to buy your rifle.
 
Some say the quality of the conversion work was erratic, so many of them didn't work well and this affects the perceived desirability and thus the value. Try it out, if yours is a good one you might want to keep it.
 
I'd keep a semi-auto .303 just for the uniqueness of it. Who else has one? Even if it was only decently reliable, I'd still have a ton of fun with a semi .303
My safe always has room for the obscure..........................
 
I have owned a couple of these over the years. The last one I had was in excellent condition and I sold it for around 350 or so if I remember correctly.

I can't remember if the gas system is adjustable on them or not but it seems to me like it isn't. The ones I had ejected the brass violently to say the least. I've seen 2 of them now with the rear of the receiver broken off and I have to assume it was form excessive battering from the bolt slamming back too hard.

Both of mine were reasonably accurate with the iron sights but I never shot either of them very much.

Overall I would say they aren't the best rifle out there but they do work and I know there are a few people that really like them. If I was going to get serious about using one, I would look into the gas system or work up loads that don't operate the action so violently.
 
Sear's sold them in their catalogue late 60s or early 70s. I babysat one for a few years. Like others have said very violent ejection but worked well. I thought about taking it to my clubs 303 heritage match and creating a flinch in every shooter to my right with the high velocity empty brass. Maybe it would help me win something. LOL
 
I've shot a few of the Crapco's back in the day. Some would shoot & function ok, and show minute of deer
heart accuracy to around 75yds. Others would not cycle factory CIL ammo properly and were not "huntably"
accurate beyond 50+ yds. or so.

That said, they do toss the brass uber hard and have crappy triggers, but if you get a good one that shoots
ok, there's no harm in trying reduced pressure loads with 150 gr. bullets to get the bugger to settle down a tad.

(Try a load of 37.0 gr. of 3031 held in place with a pinch of kapok filler,lightly tamped & topped with a 150 gr.
jacketed spire point. This duplicates the 30-30 Win. 150gr. load.)

I actually like the look of the 555. It would be a fun tune-up project for me, given I started with a good, low
mileage unit.:)
