Hi,

I'm going to pick up a couple of mags for my Glock 17 on my next visit to the U.S. I will, of course, bring along my rivet gun to pin them before I bring them back. Since I cannot bring with me or buy any ammo in the U.S., I need to know exactly which hole I have to rivet. I'd hate to make a mistake and lose them to Can. Customs. Thanks, Steve

Skycrane, IMHO, as long as you pin them/disable them so that they no longer contain more than 10 rounds, how is it any different from any other ten round mag?

I'd pin in through the tenth witness hole, then fix it when you get home. That way, no matter how hard they try, there is no 10.5 rounds.

Of course you have all the neccessary import paperwork filed from BATF to make sure your export meets all US export laws........

As I understand it, there are no import/export papers necessary for mags. The fellow I spoke with at a gun shop the last time I was there said he could sell me mags. As long as I stay under the $100 limit, there is no paperwork. If anybody could direct me to some solid info that I can't buy mags in the states I'd like to see it.

I'll try to find the smallest rivets I can and check if they fit in the 10 rounders I have, and I'll bring along a T-drill and bit just in case the witness holes on the 17 rounders are smaller, but I doubt it.
I could bring snap caps, but I only have 5 of them, so not much use.

When did this happen? I couldn't find anything about this on the BATF website. My buddy got parts from Brownell's last week with no paperwork.

;) Its been in effect for awhile now. Some companies are still shipping some parts without paperwork, others have been fined already. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, its just illegal to do so now. I tried two years ago to get Glock 10rd mags from Midway with no avail, they informed me that they required paperwork now, at that time the $100 parts rule was still in effect. You'll hear different things from different people here regarding importing mags, but as far as I know its illegal to do so without permits. This has come directly from my contact with the BATF when I tried to legally export Glock mags permits and all about a year ago. Ask any retailer in Canada what they have to do to get mags into Canada and they will tell you whats involved. They can't just run across the border in $100 limits. Its easier to spend your money in Canada where its legal to buy these things, until all the gray areas of whats legal and whats not. I just don't want to see you get into any trouble. Canada customs won't care about your mags, but thats not the point, legally aquiring your mags and following US laws is and is all the point I am trying to make. :)

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I just got off the phone with Brownell's and they said the $100 rule is still in effect. I can't see why they would bother breaking a federal law just to sell me $16 worth of parts.

Almost all of the stuff I buy in the states, is not to save money, but because it's not available here.
I heed your caveat, and will do some more prodding before I do anything. I could always stop off at the U.S. customs on the way down and ask them.

Thanks, Steve

Please post any of your responses from US customs if you ask, I'd be interested in their take on this. I know illegal aliens cannot be in possession of ammunition in the States, haven't heard anything about mags or gun parts? Anyone else here have any knowledge or links? I feel I little over my head and not afraid to admit it......:(

Providing that you have a valid hunting license from any state, a nonimmigrant alien can purchase and posess ammunition in the United States. The hang up here though is that one may not export it out of the U.S.A. without appropriate export permits from either the U.S. Dept of State or U.S. Dept of Commerce.

Exportation matters are extremely difficult to keep track of. Technically any and all gun parts require an export permit. There is a $100 exemption for non-critical parts, but interpretation of what is a critical part varies in interpretation. Add in that exportation matters are enforced by any one of about half a dozen differnent agencies full of individuals with their own interpretations of it.

Mine are the 13th hole..

so you need am export permit for gun mags? I realize this has been hashed out many times over. Yet we never come up with a sure answer. I'd like to talk to a REAL canadian border agent and ask them if it is legal. I willing to be most of the guys bringing gun mags back aren't declaring them.

The CANADIAN boarder guard/cutoms agen wont give a rats ass if you have paperwork or not

its the U.S LAW if a U.S agency decides to search your car on the U.S side your in deep trouble while in the us the ONLY laws that matter are American ones

Skycrane, a U.S. border agent may know, or not. A Canadian border agent would almost definitely not know what the U.S. BATF rules are.

I'm curious if the Canadian border services have ammo on hand to check capacity.
