Glock 17 accuracy help

I took my newly acquired, but used G17 to the range and I'm not impressed with the accuracy..

I cant get a consistent group into a 10 inch circle at 20 yds.. more like all over the place on a 18 X 24 inch target.

I tried different ammo manufacturers all in 115 grain mostly FMJ , the sights are tritium combat sights (kinda big).

Being relatively new to pistol shooting, I had a couple of other guys try out my glock to eliminate me.. they had the same results.. I also tried one of the guys Springfield XD in 40 cal and i shot a nice 5" group on an 81/2 X 11 paper target.. so I'm pretty sure it's not me..

any suggestions ?
 
buy a H&K p2000 that should fix the problem :p

Seriously I don't know what his the problem, give it a good clean up and inspect the wear on the surface, you might found some thing. Those pistol have a really good reputation but eavry thing can have a problem.
 
Even though you had others try your pistol I am still inclined to say it's the operator, not the equipment. I had the same issues with my G20 at first. Start shooting much closer and learn how it shoots.
 
Can you try shooting closer? I'm at the point I can bust clays at 50y, about 30% from a rest, but it didn't start that way. I spent a lot of time at 5-10y, learning where the sights were going to sent the bullet. For some reason Glocks aren't the most intuitive aiming gun, but once you know where the bullets are gonna go, they'll go there :)
 
^^ Start at shorter distances, then work your way longer. Once you can put 10 holes into a 1" group at 5-7m, move back a few yards. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I had the same problem when I had my G21 (now sold) and my new M&P9. Very frustrating but after many rounds of 9mm and .22lr I'm getting better but still need alot of practice.

What ammo are you using? I found I shot horrible with factory but once I switched to my own reloads and WOLF reloads my grouping improved. Give it some time and your groups will tighten. What didn't work for me was thinking about it too much on every aspect of shooting a pistol (flinching, trigger pulling, grip to tight and so on). What DID work for me was to just shoot my pistol and less on total focus on handling my pistol both in 9mm and .22lr

Hey guys, is it really the shooter? I find the G17 to be looser in groupings definitely.

I just bought 2 brand new pistols. One CZ75 and the other a G17. I bought a case of Wolf 9mm ammo.

I find at 10 meters and 20 meters my CZ get's much tighter groups than the G17. Last Sat at 10 meters I could put 30 rounds on the CZ within a 3 inch grouping but the G17 is around 5-6 inches.

I'm trying to get cleaner on the G17 and i'm wondering if its the size of the rear notch. I can see quite a bit of space in my sight picture and that might be causing me to shift in minute amounts. The notch is much tighter in my CZ. BTW my G17 has the trit sites and not the reg sites.

I totally agree on this...

At the range practicing for an up coming match... I did ok with my M&P9 at about 10 meters. Then I tried out my friends .40cal STI Trojan at the same distance and got all 8 shots dead center "Alpha", under 4" grouping. I wet myself good.... :eek:
 
do you think it might be the glock trigger? when I saw that my groups were different I tried to see if there was anything different with how I was shooting either pistol and thought that I was doing things exactly the same.

I thought it odd that switching pistols every 5 rounds I was always wider in my groups on the G17.
 
It's two things:

1. The shooter.
2. The ammunition.

Set the target out 10 feet and keeping working back once you're happy with your groupings... this solves problem #1 and will identify when problem #2 comes into play.
 
The ammo i used was "american eagle", sellier and bellot "non toxic", and winchester "winclean"... all in 115 grain.

I have shot the 40 cal glock quite a few times (one of my buddies in the US has one) and we always make a trip to the range whenever I visit.. i shot a heck of a lot better with his gun, that's why I was confused at the lack of accuracy.

I wont give up on it... I'll keep shooting it and see what happens... i'll try the shorter range, and switch up the ammo.

Try switching to 124gr. I had no luck with 115gr with my M&P9... to snappy for my liking but that's me.
 
Once you have tried all the ammo, grip and trigger finger ideas, try bench resting your Glock. Take your time, line up the sights very precisely, and you will find that it shoots perfectly well.

My feeling is that the problem is the width of the rear notch. If you will notice, there is quite a bit of air between the front post and the sides of the rear notch. Much more so than with the sights on my SIG 226 for instance. This will not only increase small aiming errors horizontally but also will cause vertical errors because it's harder to line up the sights due to the large space between the front space and rear sight posts. I'm shooting a Glock 22 with stock sights and find I have to concentrate much more on sight alignment than I do with my SIG. Someone mentioned to me that Novak sights might be an improvement but I guess you have to decide if you want a combat pistol or a precision target pistol before you start spending the money.

I totally agree with this, once people said they have problem with the Glock and Glock guys will jump in and said operator error. I have both G17 and CZ 75B. Took me a while to deal with the trigger while the CZ don't have to. The G17 is a real good shooter after several range section to break in while the CZ shoot good at the first day. Sometime is the gun and not the shooter.

Here's one for the Norinco fans. I took my Glock 22 out yesterday and at 25yds couldn't get any better than an 8inch group. Then I tried my old Norinco 1911 and came up with a five then a four inch group at 25yds. Not great shooting by any means but I found the Glock trigger has a long pull and pretty spongy compared the the old Norc. Now I'm old and have neuropathy which makes me weak but I'm quite happy with the best group of four inches with the Norc.
