Guess?
Hey guys.

I am very interested in a Glock 17 as my first pistol. I know reliability is undeniable with a Glock, but are they a good, affordable choice as a first pistol? The only other pistol that I have seriously entertained is a CZ in 9MM,

You sort of answered your own question.

Are you buying it to be pretty? If so, consider something else. If you are buying it to do what guns do best, shoot, and be reliable and dependable - you can't go wrong.

+1 CZ are prettyest (spelling?), but G17 was my first restricted and now i am completely addict to GLOCK product. Cheap, reliable and more important, i can do all my "gunsmithing" myself. Also replacement and costumization parts are everywhere and can be obtain for really cheap.

Glock is the best polymer framed pistol on the market, period. CZ is a real good choice for an all metal pistol IMO.

G17

Yeah, G17 and add the .22 conversion unit.

I'm also a fan of the CZ, which you can also get a .22 unit for.

Either/or.

+1 - I have been beating the crap out of mine for 5+ years. Also with the price of a G17 you can get a dedicated .22 pistol for extra training.

Same applies to the CZ conversion kit. For the same money you can find one of the less fancy Brownings, Rugers or S&W's and have a dedicated .22 that sits on the shooting table alongside your centerfire so you can alternate magazines worth of shooting.

If you can't find one of the commercial ranges to try them then bring some ammo to your club and ask to try some options using your own ammo and leave them with their magazine full as a thankyou. If niether of these is an option at least try holding both side by side in a store. All the good reviews in the world won't mean squat if you find that it doesn't feel right to you. It'll mean some money and time spent in this quest but it'll be money and time well spent if it avoids a mistake or at least confirms your first idea.

I was lucky enough to be within minutes of a commercial range and I got to try out a lot of 9mm options before I chose my CZ over the others. But this is very much a case of YMMV.

Go Glock 17. I LOVE MY GLOCK!!!
Bought an AA .22 conversion kit and always take it to the range as well.
I go through a couple of hundred 9mm and .22 every week.
You'll enjoy which ever one you though.

OK, you can tell by my handle that I'm a little biased on the subject ;) but, objectively speaking I believe the G17 to be the best first(or only) pistol to buy. (Caveat, if anyone is reading this form a free territory with CCW the G19 is the way to go:D)

They are competitively priced, dirt cheap when you consider reliability. As has been stated before, accessories like lights, upgraded sights, holsters ect are plentiful. They're very easy to maintain, yes they still need to be cleaned.

If you're not a shooter you can go ahead and accessorize the heck out of it too, with everything from a 3.5lb trigger to a steel frame and gawdy graphics. If you actually shoot your gun though, you're better off spending that money on training and ammo, it doesn't need improving.

People say they aren't attractively designed, aesthetics should have no bearing on one's choice of a pistol though. If it goes bang everytime I pull the trigger, it's beautiful to me.

Save your money and go with the plain, fixed sight, model. The night sights are OK, but there are much better after market options. -COUGH- XS 24/7 BIGDOTS -COUGH- Stay away from adjustable sights, they are for people who can't shoot a pistol.

I am slowly getting the hang of my G17, it is my first pistol and i have to say i LOVE it... VERY easy to disassemble and clean and well worth the money. My buddy bought a 1911 as his first pistol, and is not havin much luck with accuracy...he was shooting way better with my G17.... and in time i am sure he will definitely out shoot me lol ..... but a 9mm is a great first pistol.
