Glock 17 gen 4 or 5?

So I've decided to go ahead and finally buy a Glock 17, I've never owned one before and have only handled a gen 4, which felt pretty good in my hand if I remember correctly. So I'm wandering what everyone (who actually owns one) thinks, should I buy gen 4 or 5, there are no lgs with a gen 5 in stock for me to see so I would have to buy online without the opportunity to handle one. Also I shoot left so the gen 5 Ambi slide stop is appealing, but I have shot non Ambi guns enough that right handed controls don't bother me either. Just hoping some Glock guys or girls can chime in with their two cents.

My opinion is a little biased as I only shoot left handed on days when I'm practicing as such.
That being said, I'd rather have ambi controls if I shot left handed more often. My vote goes to the gen 5.

As a side note, you can also pick up a gen 4 on the EE for around 600 or less these days. What's more important to you? Saving a few bucks, or true ambi controls?

I have a bad habit of riding the slide stop with my shooting hand thumb. This is a problem with slide stops that are further back, like Glocks, M&Ps and SIGs etc. It prevents slide lock on empty and is a pain during matches as I instinctively tap/ rack first, thus wasting time.
If you have a long thumb, it makes it worse. I have since adopted a thumb over left hand grip and it solves the problem but old habits die hard and I revert to the old grip occasionally. If you have the same problem, a slide stop on the opposite side solves the issue. If not, or you are willing to correct your grip, then I agree, a fully ambi set of controls is the best answer.

Caveat is that, if you shoot a lot and own other non-ambi handguns, you may reflexively reach for controls that aren’t there.

Ok, I was leaning towards gen5 for the Ambi control. Just watched some YouTube reviews that debated it's superiority to gen 4, so wandered what you guys thought. I own an fn fns and it's Ambi, but despite that I still find myself reaching for the right handed controls, and will release the mag with my left hand middle finger, despite it having a left handed mag release. Suppose I just need to practice more. I guess one of the reasons I was considering gen 4 was the huge availability of parts that are not forward compatible with gen 5's, and I guess I do like that sniper grey. F.o.c has gen 5 for $757 so I think that seems to be the best price going and I will likely order from them. Thanks for the input everyone.

I'd go gen 5 just for the lack of finger grooves alone. The only other stand out difference that I noticed from my brief time handling one was the rifling in the barrel is quite profound in comparison to the older gen barrels.

Ran 1x G17 gen 3 and 2x G17 gen 4
Even though gen 4s we’re better, ended up selling them all

Now that i got a gen 5, i swear by it.
And often repeat, that you won’t find a more accurate 750$ gun than a gen 5

Accuracy between 4 and 5 is a huge step up, in my case.

Keeping my Gen 4s but love my Gen 5.
Just got second Gen 5 to send to Black Box for some milling.

Slow shooting on the line, let's say 10M, did you notice a big accuracy jump with the gen 5?
In my case, i'm almost thinking a had a bad run gen 4, and an excellent run gen 5, which could explain the huge jump between the 2.
Maybe gen 4 simply did not like campro too...

Good to know.....sold my gen 3 years ago......wanna get back into the glock game......was gonna grab a cheap gen 4 on EE.....but what you have said is making me want to spring for the gen 5

Especially at 750$+tx brand new, almost a no brainer
Comparing to gen 4

Gen 5 positive points
No finger grooves (placement was real bad for me)
Factory sights actually work well
Flared magwell
More accurate (might also have to do with better sight picture too)

Gen 4 positives
Can be had real cheap on the EE
Much bigger aftermarket parts source if your into that
Factory parts available everywhere (having a b**** of a time finding a certain factory night sight for my gen 5 right now)

They say the trigger was improved on gen 5
Tried a well used gen 3 last week, unmoded but with high round count, trigger was exact same as gen 5

I got U.S. from tenda, they matched f.o.c price of $757 but with free shipping, which is why I went with them. My understanding is that only the frame slide and barrel are made in u.s and that all other internals are made In Austria. I couldn't find any vendors other than irunguns that have Austrians.

I bought a Glock 17 gen 4 so id have more mags to go with my FX-9 when it comes out. I looked for cost of mags and figured I may as well get a pistol with em... I like every pistol I own better than the Glock but really I can shoot very good groups with it and it works great. I have large hands and am right handed so the set up of the Gen4 is perfectly good for me... If I was left handed I can see the advantages of the Gen5. I just bought my gen 4 for the mags mostly as it came with 3 and the price after what ibwoukd have spent on mags was really good.

My only complaint are this flimsy grip attachments. At home they went on great. At the range once out in the sun they wouldn't stay on my pistol at all. I dont really need them as they felt like a gimmick but still they shouldn't fall off in the heat.

Rangeview sports is a nice place to buy firearms. If your in Newmarket check them out... currently they have no tax on longguns for father's day.

Did you purchase one..??

Yep
Round count now in early 3000s
Love the gun other than factory dovetail protectors.
Upgrade sights not available yet, or of limited choice

I own a Gen 5. I like the finish better, I like the ambi controls, and I love the removal of the finger grips!

+1 for Rangeview. I bought their first G17 Gen 5. Got an Austrian model too!

Couldn't you get a Gen 5 with Glock Night Sights or Ameriglo, at least they are steel vs polymer. I thought they were standard on the new Gen 5's but I was obviously mistaken.
