Glock 17 Gen 4 vs Smith and Wesson M&P M2.0

Let me start by saying I did search both the forum and Google and couldn't find anything...

So I'm finally getting my first handgun and had originally decided I was going to get the Glock 17 gen 4 in 9mm. However as I was shopping prices I've just discovered the Smith and Wesson M&P M2.0. Both guns have awesome reviews and both have their fan base I'm sure.

I'm wondering in anyone has shot both and what they think, which they would recommend, etc. Seeing as this is my first restricted firearm it will be for range use in the beginning but I'd love to get into IPSC down the road as well.

I shot both. M&P is a good gun but I did not like the grip. Glock fits better in my hand, believe it or not. Both are equally accurate in my hands.

I'd get G34 or M&P performance pro series for competition.

Both can be customised with custom triggers and sights.

I think you can change everything about the gun except how it feels in your hand (custom grips can improve that feel)
 
I own both.

They're so similar that it becomes a personal choice. I prefer my Glock(s).

*Note: You can use the M&P/Glock for IPSC but you'll probably want a DA/SA like a Shadow.
 
Don't know if it helps your decision, but the pricing on Glocks just came down a bit. Glock 17 Gen 4 is now selling for $779 (down from a typical $899). I think that puts it within $80 or so of the S&W. I shot both the 1.0 version of the M&P and the Glock 17 and chose the latter (mostly because I preferred how it felt in my hand and I felt I shot it slightly better). I don't know if the 2.0 changes would sway me the other way, but I've been very happy with my Glock 17, shoot it in production IPSC, and with several thousand rounds through it cannot recall a single failure.
 
Go with the M&P, an improved design unless you really like the Glock grip. Some do a lot don't.

Give a 75 B a long look. I think it is a much better gun for a first time buyer and it will last you a lifetime.

I was an M&P shooter (when it comes to plastic guns) before gen4 came out. Once I got my hands gen4 G22 I sold my M&P eventually moved to G17gen4. The first M&P I had back in 2007 I ended up cutting the beaver tail off flush, looks like it took S&W 10 years to figure out it was useless. :p Its still the same gun basally so if you wanted a Glock get a Glock.
 
Try both to see how they feel in your hands but also to see how you shoot with them.

I have shot both and prefer my Glock17. The grip works for me and once you learn the "glock reset" you're good to go.

If you go with the m&p9, expect to spent 200-300$ on an apex trigger kit because the stock trigger absolutly sucks in all ways: travel, reset and overal shape of the thing
 
its all in how big of hands you have and how the gun fits in your hands.
i have both and i prefer the M&P.
Glocks just feel like im holding a massive brick in my hand.
M&P feels just right.

your gonna need to go hold them both and ideally go to a range that rents guns and give them both a try.
 
I'm not sure what people mean when they say the M&P trigger sucks, my buddies Glock 34 4th gen feels no different to me and the M&P feels so much better in my large hands. I often hear people say there is no audible or tactile reset either, well maybe for the very first M&P's but my 2016 M&P 9 is just fine, shoots better than I do too. Can't wait to try out the M2.0 versions.

They'll both go bang every time you pull the trigger. You need to handle both, and go for whatever feels better in your hand. The grip angle is the biggest difference between the 2, and the M&P has a rounder grip. Both of the factory triggers are MEH...
 
Find a shop with both and handle the crap out of them, change back straps for best fit of each gun and then close your eyes as you shift from gun to gun. ask permission to dry fire both a couple of times. best yet see if you can find a range that rents both for the real test.

Smith and Wesson did improve the trigger on the 1.0 over the years, albeit slightly. Since your 1.0 is new production I wouldn't bother with a 2.0. The trigger on my M&P9 2.0 is an improvement from the early 1.0 I owned but it still doesn't have that very strong Glock reset and the curved trigger shoe sucks. The M&P is a fine choice and I'm sure we can find something to nitpick about on almost any handgun.

Both are good pistols, you should really go to a local shop and handle both if you haven't. My personal preference is for Glock, having owned both. Objectively if your looking for a pistol that is super easy to get parts / accessories and everything else under the sun for, then Glock is the choice. If you want a nice out of box duty pistol that doesn't have a an odd grip angle compared to most other options, choose an M&P range kit. Also if you have small hands, choose M&P.

They're virtually identical in size (girth, width, lop etc.). If size is a concern and the OP wanted to stay with a double stack polymer the Ruger 9E/SR9 would be the best choice. The Ruger 9E is a great handgun. I just bought my second 9E from IRG's for $540 CAD all in. When in comes to price/value the 9E cannot be beat IMO.
 
Doesn't help OP's location is blank. Find a busy range, bound to be folks with a Glock. Bring your own factory ammo, be nice, they will let you try it out.

Shadows are lot harder to find but if you do the trigger is a lot nicer.

Small hands...choose an M&P??....my Glock 17 Gen 3 (non adjustable grip) fits my 5'3" wife's hand PerFectly....and the Glock 19 is slightly smaller yet....so never having handled an M&P as discussed in this thread - are they Even smaller in the grip area...than these two Glock's.....?

Anyone pose a side by side picture....?
