so I have a chance to pick up a glock 17 gen1 maybe 100 rounds through it ser# us500 what would it be worth.

400 top, 450 if it was pristine. any of the later gens are nicer for handling IMHO
True Gen 1 Glocks (some people think that Gen 2 Glocks are actually Gen 1) are rare in Canada--I can't remember the last one I saw for sale here. I agree with the members' posts above--as a shooter the newer ones are better, but as a collectable it'd be worth more.

My Gen 1 pistol has smooth frame and was directly imported from Austria, it has no serial number imbedded in the frame and includes a serial numbered slide & barrel, has all the Austrian proof marks.

So which part qualifies as the gun? The frame is usually the gun and slides/barrels are uncontrolled parts and can be bought without paperwork, here and on the net.

What's to stop someone from buying a new slide assembly, installing it on a gen one and turning in the slide from the gen 1?

Canada doesn't care where the manufacturer puts the serial number, as long as they don't offer that as an uncontrolled part.
In the case of the first generation Glocks, the factory serialed the slide and barrel, and sold neither except to licenced businesses with a valid export permit.

In the case you describe, it's theoretically possible now to buy an aftermarket Caspian slide and similar barrel, but you are still left with a rather unique frame. A little olde tyme police work would be required to track it, but.......
