Glock 17/ Glock 22/ XD-40/XD-9

Hey guys,

Opinions please!..

Between the guns listed What would be the best gun to 'start' with. It will be used as my first hand gun, Also the first handgun I'll own... They are all 'slightly used' for around the same price.. the XD 40 comes with 8 mags, the rest come with 2-4 mags..

I'll be using this gun to learn on, and hopefully keep for a long time, and build my collection off of it. I plan on shooting it at the range, nothing crazy to begin with. I have no idea what ill get into down the road. so I'll need a good over all gun.

In your opinion, should I get a 9mm or a .40, and what model is the 'better' one to learn on, the one I'll like more, pros and cons of each gun.. blah blah,

you guys are the gun nutz! I'm the .22 (grasshopper!) trying to learn!

I'd go with a 9MM.

Glock parts can be found anywhere which can not be said for the XD due to SA not shipping outside of the US.

Have you handled them both? While Glocks are great I do not like the grip angle and I much prefer the XD. YMMV.
 
The Glock 17 is very popular. As well 9's have less of a kick to develop your shooting skills on. They are also cheaper to shoot. Check out the price of ammo and look at your budget. No sense in buying something you can't afford to shoot. As well there are .22 conversion kits available for the Glock 17. Just cheaper all around. Just my 2 cents worth.
 
smaller the calibre the better to learn on, some people can develope nasty flinches and habbits by learning on a big gun .... if it has to be a center fire ide say go with the glock 17...but I'm biased ;) those xd's have more external safties and look slick though
 
I hate to throw this into the mix... but have you tried the S&W M&P?
It feels good in the hands, and reading the boards here, everyone who's owned/fired one have been quite impressed (I, unfortuneately, am not in that group :redface: ).
If you are still sold on the G17, which is an exceptional firearm, keep an eye on the E.E., mine might be going up :(
 
Of the pistols you mentioned I would go with the GLOCK 17. 9mm is much cheaper then .40 plus you can always buy a .22 Advantage Arms conversion kit for it (same kit works on the G22 of course). Plus there are far more parts availible to modify it just the way you want it.

Have you considered a SIG P226 in 9mm? The SIG's are very nice shooting guns especially in single action. They are not quite as cheap as the GLOCK's but they certainly feel more solid (which will help to reduce the felt recoil).
 
I had the XD9 and it was a great pistol, a little more comfortable in my hand then the G17, but both are excellent pistols. I say try as many out as you can and then decide!
 
Okay...first the disclaimer. I'm still waiting on my PAL paperwork, so I don't own. My opinions are based on putting 50-100 rounds through the various contenders. I'm in a similar position, and will be purchasing my first pistol in the near future. I've put thousands of rifle rounds downrange (grew up in the sticks and spent six years in the military), but my pistol knowledge is limited.

I've fired the XD-40 as well as the Glock 17 and 22C. I also tried out the SIG P226 and handled an H&K USP. My results:

Dead heat between the SIG and Glock in terms of how I felt that the grip "fit" me. The Glock's magazine release seemed to be in a more natural place for me. Of all the pistols I tried, I grouped best with the Glock 17. I didn't bother firing the USP as it seemed to be a VERY long reach forward to the trigger, and while I have big palms, my fingers are a little on the short side. The Springfield just felt wrong in my hands, so I only fired about 20 rounds through it.

From what I've been told, the most important thing is getting a pistol that fits your hand.

If anyone wishes to offer commentary on my points, go ahead! I'm eager to gather any information from folks that know more than I do.
 
I like M&P better than Glock or XD; it comes with 3 backstraps, has a nice trigger and looks WAY better than both. Plus you can get one for $650 new! ;)
 
Don't discount the H&K USP in 9mm if it fits your hand. With the recoil buffer spring, you hardly even feel recoil. My USP's a .45 and it feels like shooting a 9mm.
 
I went throught the same thing very recently. I ended up going with an xd-9. Picked up it at the beginning of this week and shot 300 rounds through it so far. More this weekend. I have used the glocks in 9mm and .40 and the xd's in 9mm and .45. I have held the m+p and found the grip a little small for me. Find the one that fits right and try to fire them. If you are looking for a cheap alternative check out a cz-75 or cz 85. They are nice to shoot too and are in the same price range.
 
My first is an XD 40. As long as you've shot a .40 before and know the different recoil, you'll do fine. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go 9mm and the M&P, but it wasn't available at the time, and a deal presented itself at a gun show. 9mm not for the recoil, but the cost.

I've shot all the guns you've mentioned. They were all shot on differnet occasions. When I wen't to the LGS I held each of them. There was no comparison to the comfort of the M&P9. If the M&P is not an option for you I'd get the glock because of the aftermarket.
 
I know it comes with the different backstraps make the assumtion(makes an ass out of u and mtion :D) that it had the small backstrap. It was a range gun. The ol lady liked it alot.
