Glock 17 - How to remove spring from guide rod?

Please help!

The plastic retainer at the muzzle end of the rod does not seem to be removable.

How do you take the recoil spring off the stock plastic guide rod without breaking it?

the plug on the muzzle end is removable, but it may not be a good idea if you plan on putting it back in

Got a new ss guide rod from Questar and wanted to swap things without hacking them.
