Hey all, just going to pick up a Glock 17 pretty soon and have never owned one before. What are the weak points out of the box, what should I do first?

Stock sights generally suck and are prone to wear/breakage as they're only polymer. Change the sights and seek professional training.

No real weak points. Some people can't shoot it and blame the gun. Ammo and training

Clean it, take it to the range and shoot it. If buying new, get the trijicon night sight instead of the plastic sights.

That's actually good advice, I've got a Canik for a polymer pistol right now and love the trigger on it. Heard Glock triggers are not the best but I guess we will see.

Maybe the take down lever...swap for one with bigger "wings"

I find the sight fine as its only a range toy night sights aren't necessary but to clean it that little bitty ends on the take down lever are sometimes tough to catch with fingers...if we had carry options here I'd see the extended one catching or for competition they might not want it out the sides like that

3.5 connector as you mentioned, then sights.

Just know that swapping connectors do make it more likely to have stoppages... The striker has less power, so hard primers or a dirty gun will cause stoppages. Stock triggers run like a top.

I second the recommendation to ditch OEM plastic sights. Good deals to be had on Mepro Night Sights (I think CRAFM had them for $80??)

Try Warren, Segivny or Dawson, black rear, and 0.105" or thinner front fibre optic front.

Ghost EVO trigger connector, or Zev drop-in trigger kit.

Stick with OEM glock mags. I see guys try to use aftermarket mags due to cost savings, and I don't see the point.
I have 15 +year old mags that work perfectly still.

Agreed, Glock makes a great magazine. My only pet peeve are those damn ears on the magazines floor plate. They're a b*tch when removing for the first time.

Swapping a striker spring will cause the issues you're referring to, connector has nothing to do with it.

I try to run my 2 glocks (a 17 & 19) as stock as possible, stock meaning what glock does from factory without all the Gucci crap, and as simalir as possible.
Glock offers factory 3.5# connectors i.e. The "minus" connector which I run in both as I find the trigger pull is much smoother and has a much cleaner break. I also swapped the stepped trigger shoe for a factory smooth one, but that was only relevant to the 19 and I don't think 17's actually come with the stepped one.
I've done the .25 cent trigger job, polishing the trigger surfaces but I'm not convinced it makes a noticeable difference, maybe a slight improvement in smoothness of the pull.
Sights were a big one for me, so I swapped the factory ones to Warren tactical tritium front blacked out tears that I got from Tier One Armory in Edmonton for about 80 bucks.
The only Gucci part I run is on my 19 and is an agency Arms magwell, but only because it gave my pinky the few mm's it needed to not feel like it was constantly about to slip off.

Aside from all that not really necessary crap, factory mags or the magpul pmags. Don't buy those junk KCI mags.
I would shoot it a fair bit first though, no point in spending money if you're a ringer with a factory glock.

Sights, the factory ones are ..... lack luster. Depending on the type of shooting, I'd recommend the trijicon HD's or a nice fiber optic sight set (Dawson, Taran, etc. lots of a people make them). Maybe a low profile magwell to protect the factory one since its so thin and that's about it. Get used to the firearm and once you do you'll have a better idea of what other mods might improve the firearm for you.

Buy a GTUL to release the floor plates. Quick and easy. And no b*tchin'!

My mistake... now you mention it, the Ghost Rocket connector kit came with springs to replace the OEM. I didn't differentiate which bit would have made the difference. Made the trigger of my 25 year old Gen 2 Glock 17 crisp, but it IS more prone to stoppages. I'd never carry it for a duty gun.

My 17 Gen 4 and 22 are completely OEM other than Mepro night sight on the 22 and the 17 now sports a RMR. Both run like tops no matter what crap ammo I feed them.

X2 on the OEM mags... I'm not a big fan of the Magpul GL9 mags either.
