Glock 17 or M&P 9?

Good choice. I was in your exact predicament awhile back. I ignored all the hype about both guns, and shot both at a range, put a couple hundred bullets through both pistols. Pick the one that fits you best. No point asking us which is the best, we aren't you.

M&P was designed around 40S&W round and is suffering from accuracy issues in 9mm versions. For 9mm Glock 17 is the better choice. In 40S&W I like M&P better.

What a load of crap. Any accuracy issues are the user.

M&P 9s with accuracy problems are a very real thing. This has been acknowledged by too many SMEs (Hilton Yam, Todd Green, Larry Vickers, to name a few) to completely discount. That being said, most of them, particularly the most recent production, do shoot acceptably. At this point, I would say it is pretty much a coin toss between Glock or M&P in 9mm. Both are pretty good most of the time and there is no absolute guarantee that you will not get a lemon with either.

Unfortunately, S&W does not seem to be as committed to product improvement as they should be. Instead of something useful, they have introduced an imitation carbon fibre finish option. Hopefully, this does not signal a shift to the Taurus / SIG business model of marketing clown guns to Bubba and Cletus.

There was a small number of pistols produced about 3 years ago that suffered from premature unlocking, which caused accuracy issues, prior to that, and after that, no problem. My 7 year old abused, high round count gun will still do everything you ask of it with the factory barrel. Assuming of course that your expectations are reasonable (it is not a target pistol, but will let you hit brain box shots at 25 yards) and skill level are up to it. I spent last Tuesday hitting post it notes 10 for 10 at 15 yards, with 50K through the gun.

My wife's M&P is a let 2013/early 2014 model and is top notch. Accurate and reliable. It has shot pretty much round for round with my Glock 17 Gen 4 and neither pistol has had any issues at all. Not even a single malfunction. Both are around the 10k mark in round count roughly.
