Glock 17 or S&W MP 9mm

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
I still have some time as my PAL won't come in for another 3-4 months.
Maybe I will go to Target Sports and try both and see how they feel and shoot.
I will probably end up purchasing both guns later on but the question is which one do I get first.
I'm leaning towards the S&W MP because of the price difference but we shall see when the time comes in spring.

Go to a local range or gun store, and try both in your mitts before you commit. But at the end of the day either will serve you well.
 
Just as stated previously, both are solid and functioning pieces. Both have their pros and cons, but they are always opinion.
One guy likes M&P and dislikes glocks for a certain reason.
Another guy likes glocks and dislikes M&P for the exact same reason...
You need to shoot both and see how they fire from your hand, then buy what makes you happiest.

I'd go for the Glock they are both fine guns but with the current issue with Smith having poor service and long lead times for parts I would stay with what works..
 
Your question is the Chevy/Ford debate of the Polymer pistol world. Both put holes in the paper it's just about how it feels in your hand. My advice skip the 9mm go with the .40 s&w.
 
Trying them both out beforehand is the best way to find if its for you or not. Sometimes what you thought you wanted is the last thing you end up with.
 
M&P 9 Pros:
- easier to clean and service - less lube points (the Glock has an additional lube point in the back of the gun which I find strange)
- looks better
- slightly better grip angle (doesn't make much difference to me)

Glock 17 Pros:
- bullet proof (reliable in adverse conditions)
- magazines work better (M&P9 magazines have trouble loading the 10th round stock)
- trigger is much better stock

For IPSC, the Glock 17 is a better choice in standard class as it has a 5.5lb trigger vs a 6.5lb trigger stock on the M&P. You have to modify the M&P trigger for the M&P to be comparable to the Glock. As a modified gun (Apex sear, Apex striker block, Apex reset mechanism, fixed magazines), the M&P is nicer than a stock Glock. If I were a policeman, I'd take a Glock over an M&P. As a civilian, I think a modified M&P is more pleasurable than a Glock.
 
Also consider the M&P9 Pro CORE. It has a much better trigger (5-5.5lb) than the stock M&P9. I just picked one up with a 5" barrel and I like it a LOT. Very accurate. As for the mags, you can order the ones from the US that are high capacity but pinned at 10. That is what I have and have not experienced the 10th round problem that others have.

My personal preference is the M&P platform; but that is only because I have never been able to shoot worth a damn with a Glock. I think it's because i have a short trigger finger and have trouble reaching the Glock trigger. I guess my point in the story being that they are both excellent platforms and you really need to try them both and see which you like best. You can't go wrong either way.

Now that said, instead of getting both at some point, I would recommend buying ammo with the money you would have spent on the other gun and getting really good with your chosen platform. but that's just my 2 cents...
 
Both are good guns, I got the M&P range kit, same price as the gun alone! What a deal!



Love the pistol holster and mag holster it comes with as well. The mag loader is a life saver too, believe me. If you are even remotely thinking of shooting competitions on a budget, this is the way to go IMO.
 
If you plan to reload, go with the M&P. Not that you can't with the Glock, but generally their chambers diameters are larger and thus cause more expansion of the cartridge. Also, there are good reasons not to use lead bullets in the Glock due to the rifling profile.

Are you set on a plastic gun? For$200 more, you can get a CZ 75 SP01 Shadow which is probably the easiest 9mm to shoot very well. Plastic guns were designed for law enforcement who carry them all day long and rarely shoot them. There's something to be said about the mass and reliability of a good metal gun.
 
I went with the M&P in 40S&W, I love it. I've fired various Glocks, including my brother's G22, and I always felt like I had to twist my wrist up at a weird angle to get the sights on target, and even then I really couldn't hit very much. I don't know if that makes any sense, just felt weird to me. The M&P points very naturally for me. Sights are right there as soon as I bring it up, the grip feels great. Apex trigger upgrade is must IMHO, one drawback.
I don't dislike Glocks, in fact I would like to get one still, I'm sure with more practice I can be just fine with a Glock. But for a new shooter I think you would like the M&P better, just because of the grip and better sights.

Heavier, lower capacity, more complicated and less reliable. Only someone that is blinded by bias wouldn't admit that a 1911 is an inferior pistol. This from an ex 1911 lover. You can even find Glock and polymer bashing comments in plenty of my older posts.

if you decide to get a membership with them, you can use their range guns at no charge to find one that you like (once you get your full membership).

i just signed up with them last week and i am waiting to get my full membership (hopefully by the holidays). i have an M&P22 which i can let you try as soon as i get my LTATT if you havent purchased one by then.
 
Sounds good! I just completed my C.F.S.C. & C.R.F.S.C this past weekend so my PAL probably won't come in until Feb-March-ish.
Hopefully I'll get to try both by then.
