Glock 17 vs. Glock 34 (GEN 4)

Hi all,

I am getting into IPSC now and am stuck at a crossroad. Should I continue to use the Glock 17 Gen 4 I have already or should I get the competition Glock 34 Gen 4? I know the frame is the same however, does the the longer slide help improve accuracy because its a 'larger sight picture'?

Anyone who has input please chime in!

PS: 1911 guys: I already know I should switch to a more 'manly' 1911 however, I like my dishwasher safe Glock just fine :)
 
The longer sight radius does help. I don't think there's that much weight forward for recoil recovery compared to the 17. If your just getting into the game, i'd keep your 17 and invest in ammo and practice.

I'm not sure off the top of my head if the 34 can be shot in production. That would be another thing to consider..i think (but not sure) that it might push you into limited. Just another thing to think about. If you've been shooting IPSC less then a year or two, you probably won't see much of a difference in result. Just my .02$, that and another 1.58 gets you coffee ;)

I see... Could you or someone else please elaborate on the different divisions. I'm looking up on the IPSC site but I don't understand Major vs. Minor, things like that. Basically what I am asking is what guns can be used in what division and does having a larger caliber help your score?

I've shot both and prefer the 34.... but the 34 puts you in standard minor whereas the 17 puts you in production....if you're serious about a long slide model and ipsc, get the g35 and shoot standard.major
 
Production is only scored minor...so that is where most 9mm compete...in standard and open, its more 40s and 45s since major PF is more beneficial from a scoring perspective

you'll need to read the rule book if you have a serious interest in shooting IPSC, but there are five main divisions

Production, standard, open, classic and revolver

There are two power factors (I believe for every division except production), which are major and minor. Power factor is a function of bullet velocity and bullet weight. Minor is 125 (bullet weight * velocity / 1000) and major is 165....I'm not sure this is true for every division, but certainly for prod, standard and open.

The difference between major and minor is scoring. Guns/ammo which make major power factor score more points on the outer scoring zones on a target. So, theoretically while you can shoot a glock 34 in standard, because its 9mm and because you're very likely not shooting major PF, you off-center hits on the target won't get as much points. In production none of this matters because everything is scored minor, regardless of the caliber.

I have shot my G34 in standard minor a few times and can tell you that practically, its hard to be competitive. A glock 17 in production is scored the same as any other production gun.
 
take your G17 buy holster, mags, mag holders and start shooting. after you take black badge and start competing

what he said, just shoot what you have, you will be in production (the best starting class anyways) and you'll learn and have fun.
 
As others have said, get your Black Badge course (with Alex), and use Glock 17 that you already have.

Contact BB coordinator for what other equipment you need, holster, mags, mag holders etc...
