Glock 17 vs M&P9: A Comparison

Nice comparison. I would add that the M&P has much better magazines and the shape of the magazine well makes loading much easier. The "thumb detent" at the back of the mag well on the GLOCK snags the rim on the round at the top of the inserting magazine if it's not done just right. I carry a GLOCK but wish I carried an M&P :)

I agree on the mag well design and shape being better for me on the M&P, but I've always thought Glock mags were the standard by which all others are judged. I can't think of a better, more durable pistol mag than a factory Glock mag.

Get hold of RAKS here on the Forum or the Manitoba Defensive Pistol League - their contact info in on the IDPA Canada website. You can shoot IDPA with a bad back...I do and be competitive within your Classification. The new rule book even has a special section on how to allow disabled shooters to shoot the stages. The M&P is a great platform for the sport as well. Rob at the MDPL is a great guy and I am sure he will make you welcome.
I checked out the IDPA site and watched a couple of videos. Now, that looks like something I could get into and have fun at. I'll read up on the rules for guns in the different classes to see what is and isn't allowed.
Thanks also for mentioning RAK/Rob, it'll give me a starting point as to who to contact.

Having owned both, I still have the M&P. The grips is much more versatile and the beavertail makes a slide bite almost impossible, unlike the Glock. The one thing I wish the M&P had that the Glock does better is the textured and squared off trigger guard. Oh well - can't have it all.

PS: My M&P is the standard 4.2" barrel M&P9, but I run the M&P Pro green FO front sight on it - it's a definite improvement.

The M&P trigger guard is better with gloves on.

Glockas & M&P's make up over 80% of the guns presently shot at the most recent US Nationals. Either will serve you well in a 9MM version. Pick one you prefer, add a kydex holster and a double mag pouch all covered up with a Hawaiian shirt, preferably yellow and you will be good to go.....colour is optional. :>)

Yeah, I was on an American IDPA forum and Glocks and M&P's made up a lot of the guns especially in 9 mm.

I'm a relatively new pistol shooter, introduced to restricted firearms by a good friend who has been into it for a few years. He's tried all kinds of guns, but found for his smallish Korean hands that the M&P and Sig226 with small grips were best for him. In our first few outings I'd shot hundreds of rounds through both guns and was convinced my first hand gun was going to be either one of those, although I slightly preferred the M&P.

But then my local shop had "Glock Days" at the end of March, so I went in and tried one. I didn't want to like the Glock...it's ugly, not as "comfy" to hold as the others, but wow...shooting it was another story. Two mags and two of the tightest groups I'd ever shot with ANY pistol was enough to convince me that the Glock 17 is the gun for me.

I've shot both, and encourage anyone who is on the fence about which to choose to actually shoot both before deciding. I was very surprised at my choice.

I started out with the m&p's 9,40 and 45. but ended up going to glock instead. essentially the same gun with a couple of changes. I prefer the one less step in break down with the glock. also the ability to fire without a mag and find the trigger better. I shoot better with the glock 17 and 20 than I did with the m&p's. I love utilitarian and don't care for splashy or shiny, I like trucks over cars and I love the look of glock.

You never used that little tool, did you? You don't have to....

I have a few questions if someone is willing. My RPAL is past the interview stage so hopefully I'll get it soon.
I haven't handled any guns yet, but the Glock 34 and the M&P9 and M&P9 Pro interest me. The Glock and the Pro because of the longer barrels.
Does the M&P9 range and carry kit come with adjustable backstraps?
Are the sights easy to change on the regular M&P9?
Is the trigger on the 9mm Pro good enough, or would trigger work be still recommended?
Just wondering if getting the plain range kit M&P9 and a trigger job would be better than a stock Pro model.
Also, CTC Supplies has 3 Apex choices for the M&P trigger, which of those would I need?
1) Apex M&P Duty/Carry Action Enhancement Kit (DCAEK)
2) Apex M&P Forward Set Sear & Trigger Kit
3) Apex Reset Assist Mechanism (RAM)

As for the Glock, I'll have to see if I like the finger grooves on the front or not.

Thanks for any and all replies.
I'm not sure about the S&W M&P Pro series, but don't the competition oriented Glock 34/35s get bumped up to the Standard Division of IPSC? I had always wanted a Glock 34 but settled for the 17 because I wanted the flexibility to choose between IPSC Production and IDPA SSP divisions.

I don't know what M&P you were shooting but mine has the same number of steps to field strip as my Glock and fires without a mag in the well. If your Agency/Dept/etc makes you strip without pulling the trigger you do have that option, but that's all it is, one of two take down options.

I currently own the M&P 9 and like it as a good reliable gun that fits me nicely. Luckily, I had the opportunity to try both before buying any of them. Trigger was a bit gritty as OP said in comparison to the glock I have tried, but in all due respect, the glock had many miles on it. I did the M&P trigger job on mine and now it is great! The changeable grips in the range kit are what sold the M&P for me as I too have small hands.

Nice review, thank you. I still prefer the G17 myself and the best part about Glock is availability of parts and lots of plentiful magazines that work perfectly.

I purchased a S&W M&P9 Pro a few months ago as my first handgun, and although I have nothing to compare it to, I don't think I ever will not have a M&P for a long time to come.

I changed out the sights for some Ameriglo tritium night sights, which was easy except that the front sight took some effort and planning since it was quite tight in the dovetail. (Make sure if you change your sights to know that the sights are supposed to be pushed out of the dovetails towards the ejection side of the slide)

The stock trigger of the M&P pro wasn't anything unbearable, but again I didn't have anything to compare it too. I would at least recommend installing the Apex RAM (which I did) since it gives the trigger reset a decent tactile feel and sound when reset. Just last week I received and installed the Apex Hard Sear, the Ultimate Striker Block kit, and the Competition Spring Kit.

According to Apex, with the enhancements installed that are mentioned above, the trigger pull should be around 3 lbs. Having gotten use to the stock M&P trigger, I was extremely surprised at how clean the trigger feels. Since this is still my first handgun I may not be able to do this trigger justice in describing how nice it feels.

I may think about replacing the trigger sometime in the future since it is supposed to remove some pre and over travel.

All in all, I love my M&P!

Firas I have both the Competition Kit in one Pro and the FSS Trigger in another. On balance I prefer the regular trigger with the kit. To install the FSS trigger you buy the kit with a slightly different sear and of course a different trigger. My Competition gun has a crisp 2.5# trigger, the FSS trigger is crisp at 3.5#s only it has the annoying Glock style safety which literally is a pain in the finger when shooting heavier loads.

Thanks for the input, I definitely prefer the M&P style trigger safety over the glock safety as well.

Nice post Firas, glad you're enjoying your first handgun!

Thanks!
