Well,, after many years of ignoring Glocks,, I think it's time I got one. I would be using it for the Cdn DCRA NSCC service and practical style of shooting and don't anticipate doing any IPSC or IDPA kinda stuff. 9mm it is for me.

Had a look at the Glock web site and have studied the data and have narrowed my choice to the 17L or the 34.

Any thoughts as to pros or cons between these two models? The only difference appears to be the length of the slide and barrel,, with the 34 being about half way between the 17 and the 17L.

Feel free to comment on the type of sights that come stock as well as any good aftermarket sights that you would recommend. I would be leaning towards simple fixed high contrast sights,, not tritium or dot sights.

I have searched this site for info like this,, but haven't come across any specific info on the 17L or 34.

'Don't think you can get a 17L (new) any longer....
caption in a 2000 Glock Annual states they were "Imported in limited quantites".
I have one, but I bought it used...

The G17L is a rare beast, you can buy them new in the USA, the
G24C is the same gun in .40cal you can get this in Canada. The G34 is a good gun the G35 is the "same" gun in .40cal. The G35 is popular in IPSC. If you don't have a Glock a good first choice is the G17 but here's a thought.
How about a Glock 20? The Glock 20 shoots 10mm or with a third party "match" 6 inch barrel in .40cal would be a very interesting IPSC gun.

Personaly I think the best all around choice for your first Glock is the Glock 17.

Check the "rules" for your intended discipline, the G17L may be too long, it doesn't fit in the IPSC "box"
