Took my new (first) Glock to the range yesterday....and the first 200 rounds went great. It is a 23 RTF2 with an IGB Barrel that I bought new...and I love the gun ...except for one problem...and this happened 3 times after the first 200 rounds....a cartridge gets stuck in the breech, unfired...and the slide gets stuck about 1/4 inch out of battery and can not be moved in either direction.

The first two times this happened, the slide jammed but fortunately I was able to move it just enough to take the gun down and barrel out and then manually pry the cartridge (unfired) out of the barrel breech.

However, the 3rd time, the slide would not move in either direction, just slightly out of battery, and could not be moved to take it down.

After 30 minutes of trying to force the pistol apart the only way I could fix the situation was to turn the pistol upside down, face it downrange, and then press the barrel end of the slide against the firing bench and then with all my might lean into it until the slide popped open and the round popped out.

So I would consider the last one a really bad jam.

I had the same jam occur shooting both Federal .40 180gr FMJ, and also Wolf .40 TMJ .

I took it home last night, completely washed it inside out, dried it, lubed it and now going to try again tonight.

Any thoughts ? Could it be the ammo I am using ? Because it happened with both factory and factory reload I am inclined to think not ? I get the feeling that the cartridges are not seating properly are too far out of the barrel breech...but not sure what could be causing this.

Anyone ever run into this problem ??? or could recommend a more elegant way to unjam a slide stuck situation like this ? I have never had a jam where I could not take apart a pistol...so it was not that comfortable forcing it open that way with a live round stuck in the breech.

The first variable to be ruled out is the ammunition. Buy a .40S&W maximum case gauge and check ALL of your ammunition in the gauge BEFORE you try to chamber it in your pistol.

If it ALL chambers freely in the case gauge, the next step is to field-strip your pistol and try your ammunition in your barrel's chamber.

While your waiting for the case gauge take your barrel out and drop the rounds in and see if they all drop in and put freely.

Never been a problem with my glocks but it has happened in other firearms I own. I'm wondering if you have a build up in your chamber itself of grease or carbon or other material.

The way to fix the build up (if that's the problem) is to take your cleaning brush and rod and attach them to a drill. Put a bunch of cleaning solvent on the chamber and bore brush and run the drill in the chamber for 15 seconds or so.

Reapply the solvent to the brush every 15-20 seconds and run the drill with your cleaning rod and brush attached again. I would suggest doing it for a few minutes of total time.

The above cleaning procedure has fixed problems I've had with my sks, cz-858 and a .22 conversion kit. It may be worth trying.

Did the guide rod pop out of place ?
Any signs of wear/damage on the inside

If it happens try lightly pushing downwards on the GR and see if it clicks back in
The barrel has two notches where it can rest, only one works well.

I don't think the GR popped out of place. But did not really check. I also don't think there is any damage...or visible wear..but I am new to Glocks so maybe I did not notice. I will take another look. If it happens again this evening I will try what you suggested with the GR. Thanks

Your 3rd jam, I had pretty much the EXACT same problem when shooting lead reloads in my S&W MP9. Yeah scary little jams hey!!?? After the 3rd time it happened I stopped putting the lead through the M&P. Yeah to get it open i think i had to jack on the slide pretty good. The last time I was getting worried I was going to have to take it to a gunsmith but then I finally got it open.

I'm 100% sure why it did this, but it was only with the lead. i think it may have been getting lead build up around the chamber and feeding ramp preventing it from closing all the way. Not sure but it wasn't fun! Good luck!!

I've had a similar problem with the Storm Lake bbl in my G29. It's fully supported and the chamber is tight. Rounds (reloads) that passed the " go no go guage " would not fully drop into the chamber. So now I test every round in the chamber and added a fourth die to my loader. It kinda rolls out any bulge at the base of the case in the last stage, and has worked well for me. You'll hear a definite pop when you drop a good round in.
As for a safer method of clearing a live jammed round, point the gun downrange grab the slide firmly with your left hand and slam the right into the grip hard. It should clear after a couple of whacks.
Hope this helps.

I've had the slide jam pretty bad on my Glock once, and the guide rod did pop out. I think it was because I didn't line up the end of the guide rod to the proper notch on the barrel and it slipped when I racked the slide. I didn't have a round in it, and was finally able to force the slide into battery and pull the trigger to finally get it loose.

Thanks for the good suggestions.

Last night I went back to the range and did determine (after jamming it yet another couple times) that it was in fact the ammo.

I manually dropped every round into the barrel and found that out of 200 round I had with me about 5 would just not drop all the way into barrel and seat properly. Seems to be the case was too wide and I guess to wide to fit into the IGB Barrel. I don't know if this is because the tolerances is tighter with an IGB Barrel than a stock barrel but either way at least I know it was an ammo issue.

Happy to know it was not a problem with the Glock : )

I have had this with aftermarket bbls, my g19 was picky on ammo but the g23 would eat eveything.
both were lonewolf stainless bbls.
Id look at getting that chamber opened up if its a little on the tight side.

Actually...I was mistaken. Went I went back and checked all the rounds that jammed, none of them were new factory ammo (Federal)...all my jams occurred with factory reloads (Wolf .40 TMJ). So only one kind of ammo.

wolf has a history of bad batches appearing here and there...especiallly in tighter tollerance barrells such as lone wolf and storm lake
