Glock Disassembly Question

Hi Guys,

New Glock 17 owner here... I was having some trouble field stripping the pistol at first, as I was resetting the trigger by retracting the slide too far when trying to pull down the takedown levers. The slide would go forward about 1/4 inch out of battery when the takedown levers were depressed, but wouldn't slide off the frame.

My question is, what is holding the slide on the frame when the trigger isn't pulled? Could I have harmed anything trying to take apart my pistol without pulling the trigger first?

first step is a safety check... press the trigger, pull the slide back an eighth of an inch while pushing down the takedown levers. It'll slide forward and off then.
I don't know if it's possible to actually break anything by doing it wrong, but I doubt it.

Watch a youtube vid to see the easy way to pull the slide back with one hand while pushing down the lever with your other hand.

You won't damage anything. here's an alternate method that most find easier.

After ensuring its unloaded point your pistol at the floor or the bench. Retract the slide as far as you wish but an eighth of an inch is enough to remove the pressure from the takedown bar. With slide retracted pull down on the takedown bar. Let slide forward all the way. Pull trigger while still holding the takedown bar. The slid will fall off. You may want to place a rag or similar beneath the gun to catch the slide.

As for what's keeping the slide on the frame when the takedown bar is depressed is the striker itself.
