Looking at one or the other of these ... from my research it looks like the SF is a Gen 3 base with the smaller backstrap, not a Gen 4 base ... so if I want the Gen 4 features I have to go with the G20 non-SF model ... correct?

There was one on the EE for a bit but I see it's gone now, they don't seem to come up that often.

Any words of advice for choosing between the two?

Thanks

Was going to get the Gen 4 or SF model as I have smaller hands but took mine to Black Box Customs instead for "the works". I have to say the stippling done to it makes it a whole new pistol now.

That turned out awesome Airborn! I will have to look those guys up, are they in Alberta?

I have shot both and preferred the Gen 3 SF but probably because I'm used to the ergo's of my Gen 3 G20. We were using the medium back strap on the Gen 4 and it felt to be the same size as the SF

They're (Black Box Customs) basically a sub company of CSC in Calgary. I had the SF in a G29 and I have to say I preferred the grip on the SF by far. Never handled the Gen 4.

They are their own company. Calgary Shooting Centre, Red Deer shooting centre and a couple others carry their products. You can deal straight with Black Box Customs if you want.

G4 with no backstrap is the same size as the gen 3 sf grip, which means that it's smaller than the gen 3 non sf. I went with the gen 4.
