Was thinking about giving a G17 another whirl. Was not a fan of the RTF models. Have heard mixed reviews of the new Gen 4. Not so sure the replaceable backstrap system and new recoil system are all they're cracked up to be.

Anyone care to opine why they like/dislike the Gen 4 compared to Gen 3?

I fired a gen 4 glock 22 the other day... I liked the adjustable grip length, however the new recoil system was unpleasant. My gen 2 style g23 was smoother and had less snappy recoil in comparison.

I hated my RTF2, ripped up my shirts and turned my palm to ground beef. My Gen 4 is great, recoil system works fine, no noticable difference in recoil. The grip texture is spot on, grips even when sweaty, not "sharp edged" but is aggressive.

I wasn't a fan of the cosmetics of the RTF versions.

As for the new Gen 4s, can someone post close-up photos of the back strap area (i.e., use your macro function). I'm worried that it is going to be a totally cheesy, cheap-feeling POS. If so, I'd probably be much happier with a Gen 3.

The different experiences with recoil is a little puzzling. I thought the new recoil system was specifically designed to tame felt recoil even more, not enhance it?

The backstrap fits over the existing molded grip and is pinned into place. Unlike other backstap systems which require you to remove the backstrap, thereby exposing the insides of the grip, the Glock backstrap layers over the standard grip. The standard grip is about 2mm thinner than the Gen3 G17/22 grip. The next size-up backstrap takes you to the existing size of the current G3 model and the final option gives you a grip similar to the one on the large frame G21/20.

The strategy of layering over a fully molded grip provides and enhances the sturdiness and rigidity to the pistol compared to systems which expose the insides of the grip.

Our amourer at work just got some gen 4's for evaluation. They are finished so badly and don't really make any improvements over the old glocks.
They are a north American only market right now. The rest of the world is sticking to gen 3.

The biggest problem with glocks for service issue pistols was people with smaller hands. The gen 4 hasn't really helped this at all.

They have also had problems with the recoil assembly and overall reliability.

So overall they are not happy with the gen 4 at all and are looking to now change away from glock because gen 4 will become the only choice for agencies soon.

Which is a shame as if the gen 3 fit your hands it was a great gun.

They are looking at sigs or XDM as possible replacements.

Why will the 4g be the only option? Glock is not stopping production of 3g ones. I wonder why they aren't looking at the S&W MP's?

The way it was explained to me the other day is glock is pushing the 4g for agencies so the supplier will struggle to get 3g ones. And they were hoping the 4 g would address the problems faced by smaller hands. But it didn't. So now they are looking to change completely.
I would be glad ifthey went to sig 226 withe the dak trigger. S&w I don't rate. And neither do our amourers.

Sig and the XDM are strong candidates or so I was told.

Care to share who it is your talking about?
Gossipy stories like this are not helpful or useful unless they can be verified. Too many he said-she said types on this board already.

Stories like this only serve one purpose. Help the antis and drive wedges in the gun community. But then most trolls know that and do it for those reasons.

So man-up and tell us who you are talking about or withdraw the comments.

How does this help the antis? I don't see your point. And what exactly are you looking to verify?
If I gave you the name of the armourer what exactly would you do? Call him and ask if he really doesn't likethe gen 4's?

I love the way the RTF2 texture looks (and that's why I have one), but, goddamn, does it tear my meek little physicist hands up. I should get a pair of gloves.
