And here's the CANSEC review of Rampart's booth on the G17M in 9mm, which we now know the Gen5 is a carbone clone of:

Most glaring is the ambi slide lock. Although they wouldn’t let me photograph the internals, once you get your hands on one you’ll notice some similarities to the 42/43. Additionally, this is a two pin gun and will only be offered in 9mm variants. However, I wouldn’t say it’s too much conjecture to anticipate these changes being rolled into a Gen 5 line in the future.

So interesting that Glock is reverting to a 2 pin frame and limiting the Gen5 (for now) to 9mm. .40 was why the 3 pin frame was conceived to begin with.

The FBI is also dropping the .40 in favor of stout 9mm loads with more modern projectiles and other LE agencies are likely to follow. So we may be seeing the beginnings of the end of .40S&W having a corner on the LEO market, and possibly the beginning of the end for the calibre being cheap and available, notwithstanding UPSA light .40 loads.

40 won't disappear, IPSC in the states alone would keep it going, it's the ideal calibre to make major power factor in standard.

But it's days as the predominant Leo round may be numbered now that the FBI has come out for the modern 9mm.

Glockstore in the USA now has them listed on their site, shipping August 28, for $549 USD for the base model 17.

The Gen 4 version is $499 - so not a drastic price bump. But they are selling them for a $50 premium.

Some more details from Ammoland.com - the Gen5 is backwards magazine compatible, despite the gun coming with re-designed mags. The only real difference from a Gen 4 mag is the orange follower and extended base plate. I suspect upgrade base plates will be produced at some point (?)

Also, the trigger mech is quite different. See here:

The trigger mechanism in the Gen 4 (top) and the Gen 5 (bottom) have some differences. The trigger bar no longer attaches to a spring that sits on the connector. In the Gen 5, the trigger bar slides into a space on the trigger mechanism housing. The trigger return spring in the Gen 5 has been replaced and moved inside the mechanism housing.

There have also been changes to the firing pin safety block and the firing pin itself.

and this is supposed to be a trigger improvement???

I don't understand...

Nah, this is Glock we're talking about - it's supposed to make all of those aftermarket trigger pieces obsolete, so Glock can out produce and outsell the aftermarket guys at their own game.

Same connector and housing, just a different trigger spring design.

Sure cant wait to try one out. I'm new to the Glock world, and have to say, glad to be on board. Having just bought a 17 gen4, wondering how different the stock trigger will be

That remains to be seen. Any trigger spring change will alter the feel of the Glock trigger. The stock coil spring can be mushy. Some ppl like to put in a NY1 trigger and 3.5lbs connector as it give an approx 6lbs pull that some feel is crisper.

The new design is based on FBI and us army modular handgun system requirements, that for some reason necessitated a design change to remain compliant to the specs if those competitions.

It's also possible the new design could relate to the new Ambi slide release mech - someone will eventually post better pics of the frame internals and that will answer many questions.

Not many examples of the gen5 in the wild yet.

I'll be curious whether the new slide release requires gen5 mags to function or not. Most slide releases work based on interacting with the mag follower.

IRG just posted in their sub-forum that they had a batch and they already sold out. Quite a feat considering Glock only shipped to US dealers yesterday.

No word on whether any of those are headed to Canadian customers.
