I would like to try a Glock. In particular the G17. I have been reading a lot about the hump and how aiming is different because of the hump. I like the natural position and have Smith and Wesson in the safe.

I have seen and read how the hump can be removed but I dont want to spend $1K and then have the pistol modified in a way that cant be corrected. Then force new training on aiming.

Im not a reseller so resale value is moot.

Looking at Shadow Systems, seems like the have a low, neutral and high backstrap and are based on Glock.

Who has experience with this?

Thank you

I have been shooting with Glocks since 1992 and am a fan. I own and have owned several different style of handguns and I really enjoy Glock. About a year ago I purchased a Shadow System MR918L elite and I have to tell you that this is one of my favorite handguns. The Shadow Systems backstraps are removable and they include 3 different styles. The low flat backstrap has the grip that feels like a 1911. The neutral is my favorite as it has the majority of the Glock hump removed. The high is almost identical the the stock Glock grip. Even though I am a Glock guy I prefer the neutral grip as it feels more natural. In my opinion you cant go wrong with this gun. I would strongly recommend going into your local gun shop and holding a G17 and a Shadow Systems and you will feel the difference between the 2. Good luck with your search.

With practice there is no reason you can't become proficient with a glock. Modification is not required, pistol is fine. Looks to me like the shadow system is just a fancy glock. If you want a fancy one get the shadow system. I recommend getting a glock and lots of ammo.

Practice with a basic glock will put you farther ahead than having a fancy glock with no practice

You might also want to look at a serialized Polymer 80 frame.

I just purchased and assembled one (have not shot it yet) and the grip angle with no hump is very similar to my 1911.

Frames are relatively inexpensive $200 and seem on par quality wise with factory glock frames although time will tell. They come with a speed ledge on both sides recessed mag release pocket and undercut trigger guard with a full pic rail.

The Brownells RMR cut slide from my g17 open gun went on with no issues.

YMMV but this may be an option for you to consider

The Grip Force Adapter addresses the 'hump'. It comes highly recommended (including Ken Hackathorn, Super Dave Harrington, Bill Rogers, etc.). From my perspective, it's only downside is that it's illegal in Production and SSP (it's still legal in Standard and CCP). Either way, it's inexpensive, you can put it on or take it off in seconds, and it neatly addresses the 'hump' issue.

New Glocks don't really have a hump, generations 1 to 3 did but 4 and5 are dont imo.

Don't bother spending money on modifications they point very naturally.

I’ve only put about 350 rounds through my Gen 5 17, at first it didn’t feel great shooting. The first 50 rounds were pathetic and it didn’t feel natural. After the first 50 rounds though things started improving and more importantly the pistol started to feel more like an extension of my body. Went out today and things really fell into place. The gongs were ringing all mornings. I would still miss occasionally but 8 of the 10 rounds in the magazine were hits. Went to the paper and still pulling low and left but still hitting the paper. I guess what Ike getting at is the more you shoot the more natural it will feel and there’s nothing better than spending time at the range.

Just to clarify the Glock 17 was my first ever pistol purchase and have never really shot one before I purchased this one a few weeks ago.

I will be purchasing a G17 in the near future. I will switch between my M&P and the G17 and try and note the differences. I went and handled a G17 and while the hump is less its still there and it felt unnatural compared to the M&P

I have a G19 Gen4 and it has become my preferred over my SIG 226's. Did some mods with Black Box Customs as well. Will purchase a G17 in the future and probably do some mods as well. The Glock platform is addictive so be warned! lol.

Oddly enough, I find the Glock grip angle very target friendly, it's very similar to a lot of older target 22 pistols I have...
