Looking to buy a polymer type pistol in .45 ACP. I am down to the Glock or the Springfield XD. Any comments on choosing between the two? I like being able to use lead bullets without buying a new barrel if I go with the XD but the Glock has a good long reputation. Let me know your thoughts.

Springfield is also a reliable pistol! Springfield as a manufacturer has a longer history than Glock, Glock has just manufactured one product only to great success!

The only reason I began shooting Glock was because I wanted to have lots of experience with my carry pistol. I have since become a really great fan of Glock but had I started with the Springfield, I would feel the same way about the XD.

The XD doesn't feel more comfortable in my hand, it's about the same as any G17/G22. Note the grip on a G21 (.45ACP Glock) are larger than the G17/G22 so, if you have big hands like me, you might prefer the G21's grip. If not, Glock makes the G21SF (small frame, same grip size as a G17/G22). The XD's loaded chamber/striker status indicator are a plus! The safety Springfield has introduced this year may be a selling point for some?

I can't tell you specifically how the .45 feels but the 9mm and .40 Springfield XD's are very comfortable and balanced nicely. However, if you don't like Glock's trigger you won't love the XD trigger as it's virtually the same.

As far as I'm concerned the XD is basically a Glock for those who don't want a Glock specifically.

Go to a store and fondle both of them. I was at the same point: Glock or XD. Then I tried them out. It all came down to I was able to hit the mag release on the XD easier & it was ambidextrous. So I went XD. I'm sure I'd be happy with either.

I think you are confusing modern day Springfield with the original Springfield Armory, which was a state arsenal owned by the U.S. government and closed in 1968. The two have nothing in common other than the name. Besides, Springfield doesn't even make the XD - it simply puts its name on a gun manufactured in Croatia.

I was in the same boat last fall. I have shot Glocks for many years, starting with a G35 for IPSC Standard, then a G17 for Production, and now a G34 for IDPA SSP. I love my G34, and it is a tack-driver. However, when I did an A-B-C comparison between the G21SF, the XD45, and Smith M&P 45 I found the ergonomics on the Smith won out. I've only put about 300 rounds through mine to date, including one IDPA match, but so far I do not regret my decision.

Buy a Glock.

S&W's very nice M&P in 45 and the XD have the same disadvantages. Both are relatively new. Aftermarket parts that most want, with the exception of sights could be a problem.
Forget changing a barrel out.
For about a hun your can get an exceptional Lone Wolf barrel to shoot lead out of your Glock.
All three are decent reliable guns that cost much less than those uppity german/swiss designs that are soooo overrated.. .don't get me started.
Glocks are made in Austria and the United States....

Wow! I never would have thought a gun manufacturer would be out sourcing for whole firearms! Ah well, the auto makers have been doing it for years.

I really like my XD45. It shoots better than I do, the target in my avatar is 10 shots from 25 yards. 6 shots went in to 2 holes pretty much. It handles full power loads no problem and I shoot reduced loads as well with no issues. No upgrading of any kind. For a "double-action" service pistol, I think it is great. If you want something you can tune and tinker with, there probably is better choices.

Depends on how you are going to use it. If you plan to carry the gun in the USA ever, you want the Springfield for its safety factor. On the other hand, if you are going to be carrying the gun OWB or duty carry, and you can keep your finger and everything else off that stupid trigger, the Glock is the way to go. It is the most reliable handgun ever made as far as I am concerned and the easiest to service; there are a few especially good smiths in the TOronto area (Police Ordnance comes to mind). Don't know about the Springfield. I own all of the Glock .45's and an XD45 as well. The XD45 is a big carry piece (stateside) while the Glocks (like the G30) are much handier. You need to try both and make a decision. I wouldn't make a decision before playing with both in any event. And I really do like those Glocks. They eat everything you feed them and WITH ALL TEN OF MY GLOCKS and thousands of rounds fired I have NEVER had a misfeed of any kind. Ever. Just make sure that if you have a bunch of them that you put the right spring back in the right gun... there are small differences.

Go for the M&P
We have 9 and a 40
Only problem was some down loaded 40s for my wife
power level was too low and the gun wouldn't cycle properly
But that wasn't the guns fault

I own both, like the xd better, but that is just an opinion. Try both and see which one will be better for your hands. THey are both reliable and relatively accurate handguns.
