Iam sure this question has been asked 1006 times here, Iam by no means new here or to the pistol world, But I am however severely under educated on the glock. More and more I've been eying them up. So my question is when it comes to the Glock 17, whats the difference between a gen 3 or a gen 4 and which one do most prefer? Also I've only ever held a glock 19 and 26, So i have no idea how a 17 feels, Anyone in Medicine hat want to let me fondle theirs I'd be more than happy.

gen 4 can switch the side that the mag release is on. It also has interchangeable back straps.

Those are the major two differences that I remember.

I am sure there are more, but I only have a gen 3, which is stippled... so doesn't feel like a factory Glock any more.

I don't recall any major difference in feel between gen 3 and gen 4, but I have only handled a gen 4 for a short time.

edited to add: they gen 4 has a double recoil spring in it that the gen 3 does not.

The Glock 17 Gen 4 is a semi-automatic large-frame pistol chambered in 9mm. “Gen 4” means it is the fourth generation G17. New features include removable back straps that allow shooters to adjust the grip for size and ease of use. Another new feature, the dual recoil pin, reduces recoil and increases the life cycle of the assembly. The grip texture is more aggressive, so it won’t slip when the shooter’s hands are sweaty or wearing gloves. And, an enlarged magazine release that’s easier to hit.

from Glock.com

I just use textured tape on the side of the grip on my G34. (Gen 3)

To add to the Gen 4 differences:

1. trigger bar
2. trigger housing
3. connector
4. newest G4's have optional beavertail backstraps
5. ejector
6. without backstrap installed it's a SF

If you're new to glock, Buy a gen 4. Most Gen 3 owners tape the grip and install larger magazine releases, of which you won't need to do on the Gen 4. Also, you get 3 mags with a Gen 4. The recoil spring, eh, doesn't make a huge difference, but you will notice if you handle a Gen 3. I think Gen 4's are coming with 4 backstraps now (removeable grip panels)

Before Glock came out with gen4, M&P was my plastic gun of choice, really didn't care much for gen3... Now I'm liking my gen4 G17 quite a bit, M&P's are long gone.

Gen4 is quite an improvement over gen3 (although some gen3 owners are reluctant to follow Glocks teachings of perfection); better texture, better grip angle (hump is basically gone), larger more user friendly mag release button, more effective recoil spring assembly.

I've owned a G17 3rd gen and I now own a G21 4th gen and I loved them both...Only reason I sold the 17 was because I had my eye on a CZ spo1 shadow....which is also gone.....
So I now own a Walther PPQNavy, the G21 a Smith 686 and a Buckmark 22...That's all I need or want, I think....for now,
