Glock, Sig or HK?

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a decent range pistol, nothing too bling, just an overall good performer. I've seen a lot of Glock's, Sig's and HK's for sale on these boards in both 9mm and .45 Auto. Any feedback? I don't mind buying new, my local dealer can get me a Glock 17 9x19 for $942 +tax. Most used pistols on these boards are around $1K shipped.

For range purposes, it 9mm or .45 better? I'm not looking to use this against anything but paper targets and the odd tin can. Power isn't that big of an issue.

Personaly I think that 9mm would do the trick, and depending on how much you shoot the .45 would get pretty expensive. And gun wise Glocks are great and reliable.
 
I'd probably shoot every Tuesday night unless I have something else scheduled that night. Maybe fire 150~200 rounds a night or more.
 
I could budget spending $40 a week on ammo so that would be good. I bet the .45 is a lot more expensive to fire.
 
Stick with 9mm for economy if power isn't an issue, its plenty power for everything a pistol is needed for anyways. Glocks are simple, easy to use and will last many thousands of trouble free rounds. Save your brass, if you can budget $40 a week on ammo, somewhere along the line you will have lots of once fired brass thats just a small investment and an enjoyable new hobby of reloading away of keeping your pistol feed cheaply for the rest of your life!
 
from the guns you mentioned I'd go with a Sig, don't overlook Berettas I heard they're good too... ;)

9mm is a better choice for what you want; lower cost=more ammo=more shooting, and as for power there isn't really much difference between 9mm and .45 anyways...:)

ps $942 is too much for a G17
 
It depends on your body size. If you have normal/smaller hands, glocks and Hks have a rectangular grip that some people find really unwieldy and uncomfortable.

I like the HK usp, but the grip is a little large, the glock is similar.

I personally do not like handguns that aren't very ergonomic. I haven't handled a sig so I can't tell you about those, but before you buy them give each a good handle and make sure it fits your hand nicely.

comfort brings about better accuracy. In my opinion the best fitting and most ergonomical gun to shoot is by far the Walther P99, it also has interchangeable grip sizes so you can get it to fit perfectly.

I just don't like the feel of the glock, the grip is long rectangular and narrow, not really made to fit the human hand that well (unless wearing tactical gloves, same with HK)

Mind you, the beretta handguns fit nicely too, as well as para arms guns too.

The gun in my sig is a USP .45 but as far as range shooting goes, I have lots of fun with 9mm.
 
I cut my teeth on the HK USP. Very reliable, accurate. Mag release is different, but you can use your trigger finger to release it which I find better than a traditional thumb style release.
 
I've got both Glocks (17&34) and H&K (USP Expert) and really like them all. They all do feel quite different, though--even the two Glocks feel more different than I would've guessed. I would say that any of the ones you mentioned would suit you well, although I have noticed that the Glocks seem to be a bit more of an "acquired taste" handgun for some folks, although for me they are great. They may look and and feel a little different but they are accurate, reliable and the low bore axis really minimizes muzzle flip. The USP may be a bit more finely finished, but not enough to make a real difference. Also reliable and accurate (and the match trigger on the Expert in the best trigger I've ever felt on a semi-auto). I've never fired a SIG although the folks I shoot with that have them do very well and I've heard read many posts here from folks that like them a lot (even with that high bore axis ;)). The best bet would be to try first--do you have any opportunity to beforehand?

As others have mentioned, 9mm is much cheaper (with local Hfx. sources even!) than .45, although I find .45 is more fun to shoot!
