Glock slide locking back prematurely

I have a used G26 with an extended slide stop lever installed. I took it to the range for the first time yesterday and the slide would lock several times per magazine. There didn't seem to be any pattern, but I don't think I got through one entire mag without it happening.

Every time it happened, the spent case would eject fine and the new round would never be stripped from the mag, as it appeared as the slide had been locked back. Dropping the slide with the slide stop lever worked every time, no jams. I tried a number of different mags, with no help.

When I got it home and field stripped it, I noticed the slide stop lever was rather loose compared to my other Glock and would easily float up and down. I removed the trigger pin and pulled the slide stop lever completely out. When I put it back in I noticed the end of its spring would drop underneath the trigger bar when pushed in all the way and then it would feel really loose again. I managed to slightly bend the spring so the end wouldn't fall behind the trigger bar. Now that it is re-assembled it feels a bit tighter. I wish I had realized that while I was still at the range though. I will have to make a trip back and give it a try.

Just wondered if anyone has had this issue with a Glock before, and what the cause of it was. Seems like the slide stop lever would be the most obvious cause since mag problems typically cause the slide not to lock back when the mag is empty not the opposite.

are you riding the slide lock.

just saying.

if its happening every alot, hold your thumbs out and away from the gun , pull the trigger and see if you can get thru the magazine .

extended slide lock, first time shooting it. not use to it, i see this as a possibility

I've seen this happen for one of three reasons:

1. As pats stated, the 'new' thumbs foreward grip that people have been adopting sometimes allows parts of your support hand (usually the base of the thumb) to push up slightly on the slide stop lever. Just check your grip and look for contact.

2. The slide stop lever is installed incorrectly. The spring on the slide stop lever may be positioned above the first pin (the small lateral pin that sits higher than the slightly larger trigger pin). To remedy this you should have a competent armourer remove the pins and re-insert the slide stop lever correctly (first pin first, then lever, then trigger pin). This is my guess based on what you said.

3. The spring on the slide stop lever is fubar and lets the lever float around under firing. See the armourer.

Good luck with the fix. Nice little Glock.

Whoever installed the new slide stop lever did it wrong.
Most common FAIL with DIY glockers.
It very possible the spring is now FUBAR.
Get a new one and replace

The verdict is in. It WAS the slide stop lever being installed incorrectly. After I re-installed it myself and made sure the spring stayed underneath the trigger bar everything was fine. Put 50 rounds through it without a single malfunction. The slide went back into battery and chambered a new round after every shot, and locked back after each mag was empty.

It is now working like a Glock should :)
