Glock vs. .40 S&W (Update at post #35)

I love Glocks, but many people who switch from Glock to a S&W M&P feel a 'night and day' difference. If you're going to try something else in 9 or 40, try an M&P. They are similar to the Glock, but the different grip angle makes a huge difference. Of course, if a range near you has loaners or rentals, that would be handy.

when uncertain, try both. :)

1. buy a G17, or a 9mm conversion barrel for G22(cheaper) to try out the 9mm in glock.
2. buy another 40S&W. among all my 40S&W, the best for me are HK30L and P226 out of box. my MP40 out of box was ok, but once upgraded to Apex Flat faced trigger, it's very close to HK30L & P226. Not as accurate for sure at 25 meters. basically you got what you pay for.

40S&W is more snappy for lots of people, so the extra weight on full metal guns would help a bit on the recoil. Another good option is CZ75 in 40S&W. STI 40S&W is very good too, but I just don't like to have 1911 in any other caliber other than 45ACP, it's just me.

Well I have a Glock 22 Gen 4, that I'm going to sell because I've come to the conclusion that I hate it. No ifs ands or buts...I just plain don't like it.

Now for my predicament; I don't know if it's the Glock that I hate or the .40 S&W cartridge that I hate.

I'm all set up to reload the .40 as well as 9mm and .45, but this was my only .40 pistol. So do I buy another .40 to replace the G22 or try another Glock maybe in 9mm or .45. and sell my Dillion caliber conversions as well.

What are people's opinions on the Glock in .40 vs 9mm or .45? What about other pistols in .40 (Sig, M&P, CZ etc.). And by the way I'm not competing with this, it's just a plinker.

Thoughts?

Get used to a Glock in 9mm before you try the 40 or 45. I hated the Glock 22 as well at first, however after spending a lot more time with glocks, I love them in 9mm, 40 or 45 and I find the .45 the most pleasant to shoot out of all of them.

Had a glock 22 in 40 and hated it. Sold it. Bought one of those fn40sl b cause it was so cheap and love it. Not sure if its grip angle, back strap flexibility or whatever.

I don't like Glocks much personally. I just can't stand the trigger. Good gun bad trigger. Having said that shooting full power 40's in a light gun like a Glock is just plane hard work. You may well find the same thing in any plastic body gun. I have a CZ TS, a big heavy all steel gun, in 40 and I find it the hardest cartridge to shoot well. After about 2000 rounds of experimenting with grips and different reloads I finally developed one that works well. Most probably in your case it is more the cartridge than the gun itself but a light gun makes the 40 harder.

If it is just a plinker and you reload for it, try 165r bullets and the Clays starting load from the hodgdon book.
Really pleasant to shoot and accurate and reliable.

I'd say try a G17/34/19 Glocks are the bees knees conversely .40 S&W is the bastard child of 10mm and has no real place outside of competition.

So I hate .40 S&W and it hasn't had a real place in any context for almost 15 years except to make powerfactor in competition. Since the introduction of decent bullets like the Gold Dot, HST, XTP etc. all pistol rounds perform in a duty/defensive situation close enough that there isn't any real merit of .45 ACP or .40 S&W over 9mm anymore. Even the FBI who is the reason .40 S&W exsists is trading in .40 for 9mm since the performance of ammo with modern bullets is so negligible the increased capacity, decreased price and recoil as well as the extended service life of a 9mm pistol makes it the ideal duty round.

If you dislike the Glock - yes you still will go to heaven- try the M&P. It may just be the ergos. If you reload, and I do, the 40cal can be a pussy cat shooting the gun at 130 power factor. Much less felt recoil than the 9MM in the same platform. 2.8 gr of Titegroup gets me to 130ish PF using 180 gr lead TC bullets. The brass just rolls out of the gun. Great load for steel incidentally.

G22 is far too snappy and I feel the same way about the Sig 226 in .40, but 9mm in both guns is a pleasure to shoot, and I love em both.

Now, when all is said and done I am more accurate with pretty much any SA gun over the striker fired Glock.

The Glock trigger sucks and is far more difficult to shoot well than any SA gun.

Op,
You said you hate your G22 but are not sure if you hate the gun or the caliber.
What exactly did the gun do that made you hate it?
Reliability? Accuracy? Feel? Cost? Looks? Recoil impulse? Grip angle?
The only thing the .40 rd is responsible for is the recoil impulse from the light gun. Everything else is pure Glock.
I have a Gen 3 and I enjoy it. I shoot 9mm more as .40 is more expensive so I don't shoot it as much but that is the only reason I don't shoot it. Cost. Same as for my .45s.

Well thanks to all that have responded, great input from fellow Gunnutz, and a big shout out to Master-G who offered a trip to the range with 2 other .40's and a different Glock.

It was a great spring evening of shooting. We cycled through my G22 and a couple of Master-G's .40's (M&P40 and Ranger II) as well as his G21. The side by side testing of the .40's really revealed that it's probably not the .40 that I disliked so much. I enjoyed shooting both the M&P and STI, I figured the STI would be more pleasant simply due to it weight and it was. The surprise of the evening was the M&P which was much nicer in my hand then the G22. I didn't think I'd notice much of a difference between the two polymer framed guns, but it did seem that the felt recoil in the M&P was less, whether that's because of its ergonomics (which. really liked) or being a bit heavier than the Glock. We then moved to the G21 and while it was ok, I do prefer my other .45's.

So what does this mean in the end, not exactly sure, but I do know that I prefer the M&P .40 to the G22, and in .45 I prefer my Spartan and 625 to the Glock21. So maybe I'm just not a Glock guy.

BTW I also found out that I kind of like Master-G's Desert Eagle .44 better than my SW 629....but that's another story altogether.

I didn't see this before and that does seems like a very light load indeed, Canuck. I currently run 4.2gr of titegroup under a 180gr CMJ.

I did enjoy shooting Engineer's Gen4 G22 more than the Gen 3 I used to own, but I still liked the M&P more. It had been, I think, more than a year since I'd shot it last and forgot how pleasant it is to shoot. I think that, more than any other handgun, Glocks are quite polarizing—you find shooters that really like them and ones that don't care for them at all.

The 40 cal. is fine ; it is probably the fact that it is a Glock that bothers you . Glock has become the Mini Van of the gun world as every Tom , #### and Harry has one . Every new shooter who shows up at the range is dragging a Glock with them because they are so plentiful , and change hands so often....many shooters prefer a pistol that is at least a little bit unique .
