Last time I checked the RCMP/ most city cops are chambered in 9mm.

Although the RCMP issue 9mm, city and municipal police in BC are more or less required to carry 40 calibre (or larger) double action/ "safe action" autos

What is stopping power? It is a artificial concept. The only knocks on 9mm would be its ability to penetrate barriers and it's smaller size which creates a slightly smaller permanent wound cavity. 9mm rounds are VERY capable of achieving adequate penetration.

Not only does the RCMP use 9mm but they conducted extensive ballistics tests comparing .38, 9mm, and .40 before choosing the 9mm.

But are we talking hardball ammo here or are we talking LEO rounds like Hydra Shock or the like, which in essence are jacketed hollow point. The rounds used by the armed forces of the 'civilized' world must use hardball ammo and so a larger, faster moving round is a good thing... whereas, the local police can use whatever they want pretty much including frangible ammo, which will indeed penetrate, create a larger permanent along with a larger temprary wound cavity (causing greater trauma) and then cover up its tracks, likely without exiting. The latter rounds will have greater "stopping power" IMHO. Common sense.

This debate runs regularly on the various boards and all of the usual documentary evidence is provided.

For my money, if I am depending on a specific round to protect my LIFE... it's going to probably be a .45 jacketed hollow point of specific design for self defence. The ammo you use for the range is just that... ammo you use for the range.

Be sure about what you are loading and the purpose therefore. And the legality thereof.

For the physicists among us, jacketed hollow point, especially the self defence hi tech rounds, slow down and stop a whole lot faster than hardball ammo mandated by NATO. The end result is a much higher transfer of kinetic energy to the recipient... and a larger "ouch" factor, resulting in "hey, I've been hit". I can recall discussions with various LEO's where someone has been shot with a 9mm and has not been slowed down initially. Change this scenario to a long gun round with greater muzzle velocity and kinetic energy and a target strike has huge impact. There is no "hey I've been hit" notification to the brain as they are splattered all over the place.

Again, there are many reports online to read and education oneself and there are many contradictions to said reports to give one food for thought. For my bucks though, it's going to be a .45 with a LEO round in it. There are many wee guns that will double stack ten rounds inside the waistband for self defence and well concealed. (USA only or LEO of course - do not go breaking the laws of the land please).

I would personally consider .40 instead, were I to carry for self-defence (obeying the laws of the land, etc etc). It seems, from the literature, to be a very good median round between 9mm and .45 and competes very well with the two in their respective beneficial qualities (9mm - smaller, flatter trajectory; .45 - more power).

It's how funny how the average person thinks that the calibre of a weapon is the type of gun.

It's a good laugh. Their logic seems to work like this. Say for example, stats show that 53% of all handgun homicides are committed with 9mm rounds. So, if we ban all 9mm handguns, then boom we've just cut gun murders in half!

Yes sadly this does often seem to be the case. I had this very argument with my dads wife a few years back. She knew I shot target / competition and didn't seem to have a problem with it until one day in conversation she asked me what kind of guns I shot. Well I went quickly through the list of guns / calibers and she stopped me when I said 9mm ( the first word she recognized no doubt ) and said something like " allot of people are killed by 9mm handguns".

I explained to her that:
a) they were actually killed by people who happened to be using a 9mm handgun and
b) that 9mm was simply a common caliber.

The argument against the evil 9mm went on and I came up with comparisons such as "allot of people die in accidents involving pick up trucks as well, not because there is anything wrong with them, just there are lots of them." It didn't work though, she was still convinced that 9mm was deadly and was quite dissapointed that I was using such vicious guns for recreation.

What a retard.
