Hornady's support team were very interested in these pics. Now I will share them here.
375 ruger shooting 250gr gmx at 2615 fps. Haven't had a chance to get a hot load worked up yet. 30 yards from a stand the bear was broadside slightly quartered towards me when I let fly.

Exit
Rear leg

Rear leg exit wounds

Bullet fragments in rear ham against hide

In the end it was a bang flop kill the bear went three feet and expired. What concerns me is how the bullet grenaded.

too fast ...

Too fast for a mono type bullet at 2615fps? I push 80gr barnes TSX over 3000fps in .243 and they don't come apart like that... GF shot a deer last fall with that rifle at less than 50 yards through one shoulder and the bullet didn't come apart... Don't think speed is the case... The GMX are a more brittle alloy I believe though but still wouldn't expect to come apart like that...

So you didn't recover the whole bullet? How many fragments and how much did they weigh together? Curious if it hit bone? A mono bullet in a close range shot at 2600 fps will shed some copper if it hits a bone. IMHO, I'm not sure an entire lengthwise pass through and an unrecovered bullet with a DRT kill qualifies as a "failure". Just my thoughts...

My forensics team is currently sifting through the swamp looking for other peices. Of the two we found that was the biggest. I have no idea how they got into the rear leg. They did however enter from the inside of the leg.

nothing scientific but in the first part of the 9.3 test we did there is some bullets that erratically left the water milk jugs. and we found some bullets on the ground. i will test soon the 250 grains gmx in 9.3 and will report.

but you got a dead bear ....

can you share your load too?

I shot my bear with 375 H&H 250 gr GMX at 2890 fps(factory Superformance) with very little damage. Straight side shot passed through ribs on both sides with exit hole around 1.25". He only went about 25 yds and left a lot of blood. I was surprised with the small exit hole. Your experience surprises me. Must have hit a lot of bone. Maybe the H&H is better.

69.5 grains of varget and a good crimp. CCI magnum primers. Hornady brass twice fired, fl sized trimmed and deburred. Hand polished for that shiny look.

I agree the bullet killed the bear very dead but the plan is to take this rifle and bullet to Africa where poor bullet weight retention is not an option.

That's from an rcbs chronograph.

yes there is something wrong with that bullet. light speed and should hold better, but learnt that nothing bad can be said on the hornady products lol ...

I tested the 270 and 250gr .375 Barnes in the bullet test stickied in the hunting rifle section and both blew all the petals off. Granted, at higher speed. I'm sure it's related to the large hollow point in the tipped versions
I don't see what happened to you as a failure. The raptor customs bullets are in fact specifically designed to blow the petals off and keep going with the shank. I'm a fan of this idea and I push monos as fast as possible and don't mind at all if the petals come unglued. 257 wby with 100gr Barnes is a great candidate for this ad is my 243 ai with 80gr barnes.
