I was out tonight with my little guy looking for a grouse...

Along we went.

Just as it was time to get going, a rather large black bear came out onto the path..

I lay down and ranged him at 206 yrds.

I pulled the trigger at 215 yrds and a 140 gr Hornady GMX flattened him.. he gave a death moan...and then another...I quickly upped and went to finish him...

by the time I got there, he was in the thick trees.

I ran back and got my little guy to the truck and put him in and then went in after the bear.

I was about 80 yrds behind him and could hear him crashing to my forward left.

I kept on him,. but no more sound and the blood trail was non existant.

I ended up in a an area of high ferns and thick green growth.

i stayed quiet, but not a sound could be heard (but my own heart)

I started walking toward where he should have intersected, and then a groan came to my direct left and about 20 yrds.

I put up the gun, but no shot,,,and the bear was coming straight on under the cover....

At about 10 feet I saw his face and nose,,,and he was snorting (almost as though he was eating)

I backed up a few steps to get a nice clean shot and fell down...

I scraveled like a bafoon to get back up, no use...

I steadied the gun in front of me at arms length and pulled the trigger...

The bear was done and at about 5 feet away.

Then the work began.

I have struggled with bear hunting the past couple of years... though I took bears, I just wasn't getting the feeling I used to have about it...

Unlike last year,...(when I also said it) I can truly say now, that I am done bear hunting... possibly for life...

I just finished fleshing him and took off 20 lbs of meat or so...

The Hornady GMX performance neither let me down, nor overwhelmed me

Glad you're ok and didn't get mauled in front of your young lad!:p

It sounds worse than it was, but could have been hairy...

Like I said, he almost seemed to be eating...he wasn't running or walking fast..just a few steps and snorting and sniffing to the left and the right nd such.

I don't think he knew I was in front of him...

Nothing like the focus you get hitting the brush after a wounded bear eh? I have become a believer in the shoot until it stops moving school of bear hunting after similar experiences.

I shoot everything until it's done moving and dead...moose, deer, elk, etc. but this bear didn't allow for a nice follow up... he flopped sideways, so he wasn't very visible on the side of the path..he must have rolled down the the little drop on the side of the trail and got his feet again..

You are right about in looking for a wounded bear...I am thankful I found him.

I got charged a couple of years ago and there is nothing that slows time down and focuses things in the field like a black mass barreling down on you. Thankfully all worked out for you.....

Congrats on the bear, quite often they go down fast and are up almost as fast, you realize of course how many bear defense threads this will cause?

I don't quite understand this. Please explain why only "20 lbs of meat" if it was "a rather large black bear".

What calibre rifle?
Did u find a GMX when u skinned it and was it intact - or did they exit?
.

Wow! Glad you are ok.

I have to admit that I am now that much more excited to get out with the bow this weekend to try and get this guy:

I too am a little curious; why only 20lbs of meat taken?

would love to see pictures, this is an interesting story, thanks

Why are you calling it quits on the bear hunting?

Danger? Lack of interest?

I have shot a whole lot of bears over the years....I just don't have the passion anymore for them....I don't love the meat (but will eat it)
My time would be better spent goose hunting or moose or elk or deer hunting....

Not the same,...but remember when you were young and would shoot a squirrel or a birds or something with your pellet gun or .22 or shotgun...and then after a few years, one day you were walking by and saw the squirrel running up a tree and just didn't have the desire to shoot it,...but rather looked at him for a second or two, and kept on going..

That's about where I am at...

I'm sure I'll be out with someone after a bear again (i just won't be shooting it ) and perhaps my little ones will get into it when they are older,...but as for me, I am satisfied to shoot no more...
