GMX takes a Black Bear

This is cool to read tonight.

I have never shot a bear but I have a tag in case one is just right.. I didn't shoot the nice big one tonight because it would be my first, it was about 20 minutes from dark, and crazy #### like this could have happened :)

last light it a rough time to shoot a big animal,...especially by yourself...

With 3 or 4 buddies and few cold ones why you work, well that is different...but I have been in the thick of the woods, flashlight in my mouth and making the irst cut on a moose... you know it's going to a loooooooong night....
 
The only bear I've ever shot was up the ass with a 300 win mag after my son who was about 100 yards up this trail had shot a maybe 200 pound bear three times through the lungs with 130 gr powerpoints from his 270 and was out of shells. The bear was about 30 yards from my son who was 15 at the time and across a 5-6 foot deep ditch. When we skinned out the bear Brendan's bullet wounds were substantial and within about a fist of each other half way up the rib cage. After each shot the bear went down and then got back up and got closer to Brendan. I was a bit worried after the third shot, the damn bear just wouldn't die. The length wise 168 gr TSX finished him in a hurry though, he never twitched.

I don't feel the need to bear hunt.
 
I've also shot quite a few black bears over the years and it isn't the way it used to be. I still buy a license but it's only so I can carry a rifle and take my 8 year old hunting. If we see one, great but if not, it's still a day out hunting. I'm through with sitting in a tree, waiting over a bait.

what caliber were you using? i have been looking for 150gr GMX in .308 but i have had no luck. i use hornady 150gr sst superperformance and they are amazing.

7mm-08 140 gr on warm varget...

Took a moose with it last year no issue, but with a tsx bullet 140 gr as well.

My advice would be to use tsx, I just wanted to give the gmx a whirl...
Will try them for the rest of the season unless they underperform on a deer or elk, and I don't think they will. I have a lot of confidence in the tsx and suspect I will return to it.

The gmx is actually a 139 gr
 
I used a 165gr gmx in 300 win. on bear just sizzled right through him, he went about 25 yds.I find the gmx to be light for calibre,as you can buy 180 barnes.I had better results with 200gr. tbbc bang/flop.

Bears have lots of fat that helps plug bullet holes when its shot. Use a slower, softer bullet (.308 WCF with a Ballistic Tip lets say). Hit him in the boiler, shred the boiler to bits and let him sit for 20 minutes or so. Chasing him through the bush half dead is just gonna tire you out :)
 
My desire to hunt black bears ebbs and flows.. I've shot lots of them. Last spring I took out 2 30ish new women hunters. All of a sudden bear hunting got interesting again. They had so many questions, so excited etc

I never tire of grizz hunting though

I'm always surprised how little meat there is on a black bear, unless it is a very big example.

My dad got a small "eating" black bear last week, maybe 150 lbs. It had been eating very well and had over 40 lbs of fat on it. Once it was skinned and all the fat trimmed, the carcass basically looked like a german shepherd. Once we were done properly butchering it, we had just under 40 lbs of deboned meat (and we did a good job not throwing any out). No s**t; less meat than fat on that bear.

After all that work, I think we'll be passing on small-medium bears in the future, and save them for the video camera.

Like I said, he almost seemed to be eating...he wasn't running or walking fast..just a few steps and snorting and sniffing to the left and the right nd such.

It really depends where the bear is shot and what he/she was eating I guess. I shot one this year that was maybe*** 120 pounds on the paw, and I got 50ish pounds of deboned meat off him. He had very little fat and was eating in berry and grain fields his whole life.
