Hey Guys and Gals,

Looking to buy a few new tree stands for whitetail hunting and would like your suggestions.

Looking for something strong and safe, easy to get into and setup, relatively comfortable, decent price would allow me to buy a few.

What do you recommend I take a look at?

Hang ons are cheaper and definitely have their place but I find a pita to install. Ladders seem to be easier all around if you are happy with the height. Amazon Canada is great source for either and you can usually find free shipping.

Hang ons are sketchy as hell for long sits of 3+ hours. I spent quite a bit of time in one of those small 5"by 8" hang on seat pads last season with no harness and wow I would not want to do it again.

If youre on public land you don't have much of an option though as permanent stands are a no no. But on your own land I'd be building a decent sit in stand with a nice seat. Deer get used to them being around after a few weeks. We shot lots of deer out of permanent blinds this year.

And this way you don't have to worry Bout them being stolen by ass holes.

I've picked up a couple of two man ladder stands in the US, 80 bucks at Dicks or Walmart. They're large enough that myself and my 14 year old can sit comfortably, 15 or 16 foot ladders and partially break down for moving sites.

We put one up yesterday in a spot that was prepped and it probably took 30 minutes to drag in and set up.

I'm a fan of Lone Wolf hang-ons. They are not cheap, but they are incredibly durable, silent, and well made. I recommend a harness that includes a linesmans belt for climbing as you go to have both hands free to install the sticks. Use their easy-.hang hook when you get to the hanging the actual stand to make it super easy. I can get three sticks and a stand hung safely in less than 15 minutes now that I've got a routine worked out. I take all three sticks up with me,laid across the linesmans belt as I install each on my way up. The stand is on the ground below me but I have the line that I will use later to haul up my bow clipped to my harness, so when I get to the top of the last stick I put on the easy.hang hook and haul the stand up and strap it on - done without going back down the sticks. One other big time saver on hunt days that means that you're never unclipped is one of the ropes with a sliding prussik knot on it that runs all the way alongside your stick to above your stand. That way, you get there and clip in, climb up, haul up your weapon, sit down and shut up - you're all clipped in and safe from a fall. Anyhow, that's my pitch for hang ons. I'm a solo hunter and get to my hunting spot by canoe, so a ladder stand would be a major pain to transport and to hang alone. The lone wolf stand and sticks has backpack straps and you can take it anywhere you want.
Good luck!
Dave
