Go To powder in a 308...???

Hey fellas.....I have to do some reloading for a fella,he has a Tikka T3 in 308 with a 1 in 11 twist
Am gonna load up 180 Nosler Partitions.....the powders on hand are H414 , H4831SC, H380, IMR 3031 and I beleive some IMR4831..the primers are Win large rifle primers

Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated

From your list, the H380 and H414 are probably the best. If I was choosing a single powder for 308, it would be Reloder 15. Regards, Eagleye.

38 grs of 3031 with a 180 gr bullet will give you 2411 fps muzzle vel.

I use 3031 for my 308 all the time and it works well.

Haven't loaded 180's, but I get great accuracy and results from 165 partitions with BL-C2.

IMR4064 works well with match grade bullets.

The most successful powders used in the 308 seem to be Varget (temperature insensitive, perfect burn rate & density), 4064 (similar burn rate to varget, higher load density) and Win (748?) - I've no personal experience.

From the powders he has on hand, I would rank in order of suitability, from best to worst:
H380 - should be good, temperature sensitive
H414 - Maybe a tad slow, temperature sensitive
IMR 3031 - Maybe a tad fast, somewhat temperature sensitive
H4831SC - Too slow
IMR4831 - too slow, somewhat temperature sensitive

Gonna tell him to pick this stuff up....seems to be the favorites here...thanks again fellas.....maybe drop down to a 165 Nosler as well....deer and elk out to 200 is the range and animals that he will be shooting
