Go To powder in a 308...???

Randomly does spear have load data in their new manual or other version's as a president for varget powder in 308 loads.... 168 grain sierra match kings, but my lyman 48th edition doest have varget to be found anywhere, and I have ordered spear's manual (gotta catch them all :))

Peace!

I loaded up some .308s with Varget and 168gr Hornady A-Maxes. Made a nice hole out of 5 shots. The A-Max bullets seemed to like milder loads.

Powders for .308

I have done a fair amount of hunter class shooting useing .308 win and powder of choice was H 4895 39gr and 168 gr match bullets by many of the best shooters

what barrel length and bullet weight are you useing with varget,rl-15,? i have 22 inch barrel and dont get much for velocity with 165 and 180 gr bullets, 4064 has been best foe accuracy and velocity,2800fps with 150gr, but only 2550 fps with 165s, is that it? wade

Keep in mind there is max velocity and accurate velocity. Sometimes they are not the same.

For hunting, no game is going to care. For target shooting, best score wins.

Each barrel is a story all its own so load what it likes. In general, I find the Hodgdon Extruded powders enjoy being loaded warm to hot. They burn very clean and consistently at magnum pressures.

Also, amax bullet of all cals and weights usually tolerate going 3300fps and depending on the barrel, 3400fps without issue. They don't need to run slow.

42.5 grains of Varget over a 150 Nosler CT worked out very well...I mounted an Elite 6-24 scope on her today just to try it out..everything went perfectly...gonna go back to the range tomorrow with a few rounds in 165gr Hornaday Interbonds over Varget
H380 was no slouch either..Factory Federal was also decent...these were groups befor I put on the Elite scope, they were shot with a Scopechief 1.5-7 power

Sticker what were you shooting that out of? in Sierra's manual they say 43.5 gr varget with 168gr SMK does 2719 out of a savage 12vss 26", 1 in 10 twist, with federal brass and 210M primer's. Are you pushing it out of something shorter than a 26" pipe? I know real world and temperature will change results, and every barrell and firing pin is a different story not to mention components. I am just currious. I have a remmy 700 26" pipe and standard stock 1 in 12"

44.4 gr of Varget works well for 165 gr of Hornady SP or IB. I get around 2680 fps.

My browning wouldn't shoot the Barnes TSX 165 gr well.
